Subject: NT can't login, can telnet to Linux PC
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 14:15:27 GMT
I'm trying to connect a Linux-Samba PC to an existing LAN. From my
NT-Workstation v4, I can network-browse and find the linux PC. But, when
clicking on the linux PC within the browse window, a prompt appears:
Enter Network Password. I enter a user name and password (that is valid
on the Linux PC) and get an error message: Incorrect password or unknown
username.
However, I can run TELNET on the NT system and connect to the Linux PC.
Then, I can log in using the same username and pw that is rejected while
browsing!
Any ideas why I can't login from NT?
Does a username with mixed upper/lower case matter?
I recently installed Red Hat Linux 5.2 which I think includes Samba
1.98. I've made sure Samba is running and smbclient can see other PCs on
the LAN.
Thanks,
Rick

Well,
If you are using RedHat than linuxconf should be installed for you.
Just use it to enter parameters for eth0 and where it asks "kernel module
to use" just type via-rhine ( without the .o) ( Redhat already has the
via-rhine module in its compiled repository and it can locate it from
its modules directory. If you want to replace it for some reason, just do a
locate on via-rhine.o and replace it with your own compiled file)
If you want to do it by hand, edit /etc/modules.conf ( or conf.modules I
forget at the moment) to add the following line
alias eth0 via-rhine
Then go to /etc/rc.d/sysconfig/network scripts and create a file called
ifcfg-eth0 ( look up ifcfg-lo etc in the same dir for format) You might
also have to edit /etc/rc.d/sysconfig/statricroutes ( or something like that)
to enter routing information.
I think you will be better off with the linuxconf thing.

Ever thought of the math? Your cable modem gives you somewhere between 1.5 Mbit
(usually) and 7Mbit (theoretical limit). Since that's going to be the bottleneck
anyhow, I guess I wouldn't worry about it. I am using a 486/33 and that works
fine for me with speeds around 1.5 Mbit, so I guess I have no problems yet.

Easyly? I don't know what you call easy. I have a RH6.0 box where I set up a
single autodial connection using pppd and that should work equally well for 2
modems:
I my setup I know what the IP address of the router on the ISP end is, so I set
up pppd with the 'demand' and ':<remote-IP>' options added (use netcfg to set up
an ifcfg-ppp0 file and go from there). That way pppd is started on network
staup, but doesn't dial in yet. It then sets a route to the ISP machine and when
any traffic to that address/port arrives it will dial. Setting the 'idle' option
allows to tell how long it will stay up when no more traffic is observed.
This works fine for me (although it took me the better part of 2 days to find out
from where each single script is called) and I see no reason at all, why that
should not work with 2 modems just as well (using ppp0 and ppp1).

Hi!
I am setting up a machine with RedHat Linux 6.0. The machine have a
network card with Realtek 8139 chip, so I am using rtl8139 driver.
On startup, several commands involving setting up routing gives this
error:
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
However, after the startup process over and I login as root, I can
manually do all the routing command without error.
My machine doesn't use dhcp, so there shouldn't be a problem with that.
Any idea why?
Thanks.

Yes sendmail handles SMTP connections. And as far as multi-domain thing is
concerned, you can do multihoming of your network cards ( different IP's
for the same network interface ) So yes, that should take care of the problem.
And the whole thing ( hardware +software) should cost you less than $100 :-)
If you are new to linux, get (buy CD or download ) an easy to install distribution
like Redhat, Suse or Caldera... Read some how'to's etc.. ask questions on
newsgroups if you get stuck. It will be well worth the effort.

Hi there
When I connect to a Novell box or a Linux box with mars-nwe using a
Linux client it shows file creation dates which are 2 hours ahead.
Apearently the Linux client assumes that the file creation/modification
dates are in UTC and translates these times to localtime by adding two
hours.
Suggestions?

Did that before. Nothing that I can see. I watch the logs,

I can press the voice/data button on the modem and hear the

I don't see any PPP processes running, and I wait for the line
discipline to time out. However, I still have the problem.
I think the modem is in a funny state where it thinks it's connected,
but the system doesn't know it.

Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 16:06:22 GMT
We are using an NT-Network with DNS and WINS installed on the NT Server.
DNS is only for external names, WINS for the intranet.
Me Linux machine is not able to find any name in the internet.
How can I make it resolve names with the WINS server? The Problem is,
all machines get their IP from a DHCP server so it is "dynamic" and I
can't put all the names into the DNS server!?
Thnx for reply

Our network is under NT, and we have all the same WINS(who is also one
of the DNS). My data are stored in the server named "\\FS01\". Could I
reach them with mount or not? I already tried it, and it didn't work!!!

-The entry "0.0.0.0" don't appear since I don't write the command (after

"route add -net default gw 149.222.132.1 dev eth0"
-I entred all this values in /etc/route.conf, but Linux don't use the
entry "0.0.0.0"
-You see, that all the NetMask are "255.255.255.255". It is because the
commant route don't accept the real netmask "255.255.192.0" with the
actual IP "149.222.132.1". I don't know why... "route" accept it ONLY
when the IP ended with xxx.xxx.xxx.0. In /etc/route.conf I can write
what I want, Linux don't repair the errors. But when the Netmask is not
"255.255.255.255", I never access the network.
-I can access the local network without writing the extra route command.
A ping with the Gateway or the DNS work in all case. But when DEFAULT
don't appear in the list, I can't access the Internet.

But I have another question (my last ;-))
Could I install Linux (SuSE ,RedHat or Debian) using a FTP server? How
must I configure the routing?
When the routing is well configured, Yast can reach any FTP server, and
I can update my system via internet (ftp.gwdg.de).
But under the "Installation environment", booting the system with a boot
disk, I can't reach the network. How can I configure the routing
informations under YaST to reach an FTP server
Thanks for your attention... Thanks for all.
Have a lot of FUN.

I have also noticed this. I have a small web site with some pictures
of m kids on it. For around 70% of the day I can not access it
remotely.
Now, I know you are thinking the obvious, ports are blocked. I have
also opened daytime, smtp and a few others. Same thing, I can not
connect to them very realiably.
I check the logs and everything seems fine.

Subject: Telnet/ftp not working after RH 6.0 install
Date: 14 Jul 1999 11:36:43 -0400
I've recently installed RH 6.0 on my home intranet. I'm now
able to ping between my two machines and mount NFS volumes,
but I don't have telnet or ftp service between the two
machines. ftp or telnet attempts hang and eventually time
out.
Running "ps aux" reveals that the expected daemons are
running. I've configured hosts.deny and hosts.allow as I
had them before, without success.
Any tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
