Hi all,
Is there anyone using mgen on Linux? I have a timestamping problem I
don't know how to work out.
I would really appreciate if anyone using it could contact me and say if
I'm the only one having this problem (I'm using 2.2.7 - redhat6). I'm
really desperate...
thanks

You don't need a more current verison of chat and I don't regard the
script as fixable. You need a better understanding of chat. Anything on
the chat argument list that it doesn't understand is taken to be an
expect string that starts an expect/send pair. I don't know how chat
arrived at the expect string you found in syslog but it's not really
important to know how it happened.
The chat scripting I think you meant should read
chat TIMEOUT 5 "" ATZ TIMEOUT 45 OK ""
This sets a 5 second timeout, waits for nothing (""), sends ATZ off
to nowhere, sets a 45 second timeout, waits for OK from nowhere, and
sends a carriage return to nowhere if the OK from nowhere appears.
I say nowhere because it doesn't appear that you connected the modem
device file with chat in any way.
In any case chat was make to work with pppd. It can be used as a
standalone but I wouldn't recommend it.
If you haven't already done so you should try getting a PPP connection
using pppd and chat without diald. Here's a link that has a lot of
information about getting connected in Linux:

I have two machines each running Win98 and RH 6.0 dual boot. On one of
the machine I have a SupraSonic II modem that I can connect to my ISP at
over 100Kbps under Win98. Can my Linux box on the other machine share
this connection over LAN? If so, how can I do that? I would appriciate
it if the reply can be cc to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well. (My LAN is not
setup under Linux yet, but I will do so soon. I have Linksys's Fast

Go to http://www.freshmeat.net and enter ip_masq_icq into the search box.
It's a ipmasq module for icq.

I don't want to install a news server on my server.
I just want to access an external news server from my internal network.

Subject: Re: Linux as Firewall for DYNAMIC IP PPP connection
Date: 24 Jul 1999 20:22:14 GMT
Well, have fun with the 386 (compilin gmight be hell) but beyond that,
I've done it (though with RH6.0, pppd-2.3.7-2, ipchains) and it should be
quite straightforward:
1) install pppd and get the chat script to dial in to your ISP and make a
PPP connection.
2) read the manuals of pppd carefully, it can actually autodial the
connection if you give it the IP of the router on the ISP side (and
that one does not usually change). So what you do is dial up you ISP,
do an ifconfig ppp0, note the P-t-P address and then set pppd
up with the 'demand' and ':<ISP address>' and 'idle' options.
You probably want to use netcfg or linuxconf first, to set up
the appropriate files (ifcfg-ppp0 in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts)
and then modify that.
3) Set up the firewall. Both ipfwadm and ipchains have an option to
filter incoming traffic by interface, so the trivial approach is
to disallow all private IPs (10.0.0.0/8, 127.0.0.0/8,
172.16.0.0/12 and 192.168.0.0/16) on the external interface
(-W ppp0), add any other paranoia, and finally set the forwarding
rules to masquerade anything (that makes it through the input).
4) If needed load the ip_masq_ftp, etc modules (insmod).
Voila, you've got a gate/firewall and you really don't need to worry
about who you are. And if you DO want to know, you can put a script in
/etc/ppp/ifup.local to tell you.

Subject: Firewall/Proxy server questions
Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 20:38:32 GMT
Hello and sorry for the long post,
I have a couple of questions that have probably been asked before but I
haven't found any FAQ's to reference to, so please don't flame me for asking
again if I'm pulling a brain dump here.
A little background - I have 3 computers at home, 1 running Win98, the other
Linix 6.0/Win 2K and the 3rd still running Win95 each has it's own hard
coded IP address and are connected to a hub also attached to the hub is a
cable modem (bridge) which goes out to the world, Since I have hardcoded IP
addresses I'd like to start hosting a website. Unfortunatly my ISP (@home)
does not officially support in mohe networking nor will they support domain
registration.
My question is can anyone give me advice on a way to configure one of my
existing machines to act as a proxy/DNS/Firewall server? I could live with
just using the IP address instead of an Http:// for the website but I want
to provide some degree of security to the system while allowing the family
to get access to the harddrives from work and school. Any help would be
much appreciated.
Thanks
Sterling

call linuxconf and enter all the info below in the appropriate places

Subject: Help needed connecting to Non-MS-CHAP NT RAS with PPP - E=691
Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 15:06:59 -0600
A recent server upgrade has left me unable to connect to our NT RAS at
work. Our Network Admin backed off the security for us so that it
wasn't insisting on MS-CHAP 80, but I still can't connect. Can anybody
help me?
Below I've included the syslog pppd debug messages (username and
password '*'ed out) from my attempts using CHAP and PAP. As you can
see, the RAS initially challenges with "auth chap 80", but accepts my
request for "auth pap". However, it does not accept my username and
password, returning hardware error "E=691". Why? I can connect from NT
and 95.
I'm using Mandrake 6.0 (based on Red Hat 6.0???) and pppd version 2.3.7.

I tried this site and had no problem at all (using Netscape 4.61 on RH

The alarm is a timeout looking for the CONNECT string, so the modem didn't
send a CONNECT to the serial line or the CONNECT didn't get to the serial
line in time. Posting the chat execution script and chat expect/send
script plus an exact copy of all the chat syslogd log messages complete
with timestamps might be useful.
