Does anyone know of any good Network monitors/sniffers out there for
Linux. I am putting up a network monitoring server at work and want to
use Linux. I am currently tying out KSnuffle, but want to see what else
is available.
Thanks in advance

Subject: Multilink PPP trouble
I have a 100 MHz 486 box I'm using as a firewall for my home computing
environment. Connected to this box I have a 3Com Impact IQ ISDN modem
capable of running multilink PPP. When I use the modem on a MS Windows
machine everything works, so I know my ISP is capable of handling
multilink though this modem. On my firewall box (Red Hat Linux 5.2) only
a single link (one data channel) will work. If I try multilink and tail
the /var/log/ppp-log, I get the following messages:
...
...
..: Serial connection established.
..: Using interface ppp0
..: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
..: Remote message:
..: IPCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
..: Connection Terminated.
..: Exit.
I've tried everything I can think of :) including different motherboards
and high speed comm ports. At this point I believe it is my software
configuration.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
As far as i know you cannot remote login as root.
Create a dummy account on the system, xdmp to that and then goto super user
mode

Hi there...
Lets start at the TOP... I am a 7 day old Red Hat v6.0 Newbie! and I =
need alot of HELP!
I will say this... RH60 was a Very Sweet Install! I like it!!! I have =
a friend that is
just learning also and he showed me how to get into the XWindows and to =
use Gnome and KDE.
Interesting! I think! I kinda like it, a little different then the =
Windozzze, but I hey,
at least it is not owned by Billy!!!=20
I will list what I have in my system and all the questions that I have =
after... (with
more questions later)
Pentium 100 Mhz
32 MB RAM
1.02 GB HDD (950 =3D RH60 / 50+ =3D Swap)
3=BD" Floppy
Trident 9685 (PCI)(on a 14" VGA - 640x480)
D-Link DE-528CT (PCI NIC)
3-COM 3C509B-TPC (ISA NIC)
SB-16 (ISA)(Model CT-1740 w/ISA)
SB-CDROM (2x attached to SB-16)
Dexxa 2 Button Mouse (Serial)
Now that I have that out of the way... Here is what I need to know. I =
have Win98 Box
also, and wish to have them both (Win98 & RH60) as an internal network. =
Plus I want
to be able to serve the internet from Linux to Win98. I would prefer to =
use the NAT
method. I am on the @HOME Cable System here in Ontario.
Here come those NEWBIE Questions.... and if you can answer these in =
DETAIL, I would be=20
greatful to you... Thanks in Advance!!! [;-)
Questions :
1) I have a DE-528CT NIC. I have the Driver from D-Link. I don't know =
how to compile
it into the Kernel. Can someone please outline this for me Exactly =
Step by Step?
2) I have the 3C509B NIC and can not seem to get it to recognize that it =
is there.
Any ideas? I tried using the "NETCONF" and "NETCFG" to set it up as =
eth1, (as
eth0 should be the DE-528CT NIC) I used the 3c509 driver for eth1 =
and left=20
all the other boxes empty.
3) I would assume that eth0 should be DHCP'ing its info from my @Home =
server, and eth1
will have its own IP. (ie: 192.168.xxx.xxx) But so far NOTHING!
4) I used the "SNDCONFIG" to try and configure my SB-16, but did not =
work. =20
Here is what it said... =20
+------------------------------------+
A PnP sound card was found in your
system. The details are:
Model: CMI8330. Audio Adapter
[OK]
+------------------------------------+
When I used to have this card in my Windozzze box, it was NEVER a =
CMI8330, it
always automatically came up as a SB-16. I don't get it... but =
anyways,
When it gets to the part where it tests the WAV Audio, it works... =
But when it gets
to the MIDI Test, it FAILS. So I do a Manual Config on it and go =
to the Sound
Blaster 16 setting, I set it up with the following information :
IRQ=3D5 / DMA-Low=3D1 / DMA-High=3D5 / I/O=3D220 / MPU-I/O=3D330 =
(as it is hard set=20
on the Card...) If you are not familiar with the card, please =
visit :
http://support.soundblaster.com/specs/audio/sb16/ct1740.html
After I set it up on the Sound Blaster 16 configuration, I no =
longer hear the=20
WAV Audio, but now the MIDI works... I don't understand it ????? =
And when I reboot,=20
I get :=20
"Finding module dependencies"
"conf:4: missing module argument"
"can't open [FAILED]"
"Loading sound module"
"conf:4: missing module argument [FAILED]"
"Loading midi module"
"conf:4: missing module argument [FAILED]"
5) How do I get it to recognize the CDROM on the SB-16 ISA Bus?
6) Is there a way to Auto Mount these Devices? (ie: Drive A:/ and CDROM)
Well.... If I can get all of these working... I am sure that I will have =
more questions
down the road. But I would be Very Happy if anyone could help me with =
any and/or ALL of
these issues. Again... Thanks in Advance.
Thanks from another linux newbie,
Kasey (aka - ^KC^)

pppd[830] : Serial Connection established.
pppd[831] : Exit.
I have all of the following set up as shown in the PPP-HOWTO:
/usr/sbin/ppp-on
/usr/sbin/ppp-on-dialer
/usr/sbin/ppp-off
/etc/ppp/options.tpl
Also I have pppd-2.2 and pppd-2.3.
I have not been able to find any information about my particular problem
i.e. pppd exiting after the connection is established.
When I run 'ifconfig' after connecting this is displayed:
Link encap: Local Loopback
inet addr: 127.0.0.1 Mask: 255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU: 3924 METRIC: 1
Rx packets: 18 errors:0 dropped: 0 frame:0
Tx packets: 18 errors:0 dropped:0 frame:0
collisions: 0 txqueuelen:0
When I type 'route' I get: loopback
Since I am new to Linux I don't know what I should expect after the "Serial
Connection established".
I also know my DNS's IPs. My ISP issues Dynamic IPs.
I have been able to connect and retrieve my local IP and the servers IP
using a dip-script that sends for $locip and $rmtip, however I don't know
how to retrieve this information using the above mentioned ppp-on script
which uses 'chat' (I think).
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am in love with Linux and
would like to ftp, surf, and all that stuff without using Windoze.
Hopefully someone will be kind enough to come to my aid....if not I will be
spending more time on trial and error....that which does not kill me will
still make my eyes sore.

Subject: RH6 Rebooting w/ 3Com 3C905B Card
From: Brad Howes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 28 Jul 1999 20:11:21 -0400
The good news: my network runs like a champ. I'm running RH6 with a 2.2.10
kernel on a Dell T500 connected to a cable modem, using DHCP for my IP
address. I have Samba running, and VMWare virtual machines can talk to my
Linux box and to the outside world via IP masquerade. In short, life is
great.
Except when I warm reboot. Then, my eth0 interface fails to obtain its
DHCP info, and everything else craps out. If I cold boot (power off, power
on) then all is OK. If I warm boot into Windows 98, the network is also
alive. So, my guess is Linux or this wacky `pump' guy -- I downloaded the
latest 3C905B driver, though I'm not ruling that out either.
Any hints, advice, comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brad

Eugene,
Thanx for the speedy response... well.. yeah 10.0.0.0 is the network, but
upon trying to add the address using route I get the error "invalid
argument" ... which seems weird to me, because when I looked it up in the
man pages, it showed a very similar command for setting up the local
loopback.. curious indeed... so I typed in the EXACT command shown in the
man pages and got the same invalid argument message... ack.. *pulls out
hair*... I'll figure it out eventually tho...Any further help would be
greatly appreciated...

try http://localhost/
is netscape find only on word on the http line then it tries to find it on
the net.

This card uses the AMD PCI-version of the LANCE (PCnet II, I think).
Use the pcnet32 driver. The driver may report an unknown card ID,
but it still works.

Thanks. You workaround also works for RH6.
I asked this because if you "man securetty", you know there should be a way
to let root login directly through telnet session but it just doesn't
work... I think it is not related to security since the /etc/securetty
file is to let you bypass this.
I also knew another workaround and would like to share with others. Comment
out the pam_securetty.so line in /etc/pam.d/login file.

Yes, you can have a Linux firewall and still function with everything.
See David A. Ranch's TrinityOS project.
