Subject: NFS Problem
Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 09:06:28 -0600
Hi,
I am running Red Hat Linux 6.0 and trying to share a directory on one of
our computers.
In trying to set it up (I am attempting to provide access to all
machines
until I can get it working correctly and will then restrict it to
certain hosts) I configured the exports file to look like:
# Exports file
/users (rw)
I then ran exportfs.
When I go onto another machine (log in as root) and type showmount -e
<othermachine> I see the response
Export list for 192.168.0.53:
/users (everyone)
I then attempt (on the same machine (as root))
mount 192.168.0.53:/users /users
which responds with:
mount 192.168.0.53:/users failed, reason given by server: Permission
denied.
Has anyone come across this problem before? - I have read in various
places
that the permission denied problem is related to the exports file. But I
have tried many combinations of settings and would not expect to get the
response I am getting from showmount if there was a problem.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Pete.

Subject: CGI-BIN configuration over a Linux server
Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 11:16:04 -0400
My question is the following:
I want to set the CGI-BIN directory on the Linux server i work on.
I'm using Linux at home, so with ftp i can connect directly to the
server. The thing is: I want to make a CGI-BIN directory for writing and
reading. I presume that you know how is the utility of a CGI-BIN
directory for HTML purpose.
So i need the keywork to enter (something like chmod) and the
parameters to set correctly the CGI-BIN and if somebody have other
advice to tell me about Linux server configuration for CGI-BIN i will
appreciate a lot!!!
I'm a newbie on Linux but with a little help I can make great thing!

Salaam Wajdi,
AFAIK "alarm" means time-out. So your modem can't "CONNECT" to remote
site in the first place. (Or it connects, but somehow fails to feedback)
Do you have the same modem at both machines? Because different modems
usually need different commands for special tasks. However, if you use
basic commands, any Hayes compatible (AT) modem should work. One usually
needs only "ATZ" for modem init, and "ATDT?????????" for dialling out.
Do you have any fancy commands besides that?
Another thought: I would recommend installing KDE and all associated
utilities (even if you don't intend to use them) on RH6.0 and use kppp
as your ISP connection tool. You don't need to make a bit of setup at
system to use kppp. It does all setup dynamically on the fly when you
connect, and reverts back when you disconnect. It has its own setup
utility.
If you decide to use kppp, observe the following please:
i) /etc/ppp/options file must exist, and must be empty.
ii) chmod u+s /usr/bin/kppp /usr/sbin/pppd
Hope this helps,

Dear LinuxUser (Anyone),
Need help...and don't really get this. I just formatted and freshly
installed RH6 on my system. I have networking enabled for the
computer. I can ping myself in the loopback...but I can't ping other
computers on my network. The light on the hub for my connection to it
keeps blinking.....so for some reason..my computer is pinging the
hub...what is wrong? why can't I log on and ping the other computers?
I am using a Kingston 10/100 KNE100TX NIC...but I am using the Tulip
module. I am thinking this might be a module problem. I also have
Win98 on the same computer and the NIC works great. But for some
reason, Linux doesn't like my NIC? Please offer some suggestions.
Also...I have a server computer running Win98 Second Edition that is
running Internet Sharing Connection for my ADSL connection. Would using
Linux as a client computer work and get access to the net through the
Win98 server?
But more importantly...I need my Linux to register on the computer
=)
Please help. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all,
Just got Linux 6.0. I am having problems getting Linux to see my NIC. I am
running a dual-boot machine(NT and 98). The NIC works just fine in both.
By the way, it's a NE2000.
When I am in Linux, I set the all the correct settings(i.e. Kernal, io, irq)
for the NIC, reboot, and I get an error when trying to initialize the NIC.
Any help would be great....

Subject: Why ICQ can connected to Internet even behind a firewall?
Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 15:42:01 GMT
Hi all,
I am behind a firewall. In the ICQ preference, I did not
set any socks4/5 proxy server. "I am not behind a firewall or proxy" was
checked.
However, I still able to connect to the icq server at
icq1.mirabilis.com thought port 53.
I can understand that port 53 was open for domain nameserver in
firewall. however, how icq client can reach the host icq1.mirabilis.com?
route -print doesn't shown the route. icq is not using proxy.
BTW, what is Socks4/5?
What protocol (tcp or udp) does icq used in port 53?
netstat -a does not give me any hints.
any help?

Lam

Hello,
I've just set up my Debian 2.1 box with version 2.2.10 of the kernel up on
the Road Runner cable modem server to be a proxy for my internal network.
Almost everything works except for the following:
I want to be able to have Xwindow programs bounce from outside the network
to computers on the internal network. I'm trying to have it set up so
someone can set their display to <mycomputer>:10 from anywhere and the
proxy would forward port 6010 to the other computer's 6000 port.
The other question is with ICQ. I'm trying to get a socks5 daemon going on
the proxy. ICQ doesn't see the proxy as a sock5 server when I start the
daemon. Is there anything special I need to do?
Thanks in advance.

You need to stop ypbind from running, how to do this is distro dependant
RedHat you need to remove the Sxxypbind link from /etc/rc.d/rc?.d where
'?' is your default runlevel (3 if you boot to console, and 5 if you

This is the problem, the ISP doesn't provide the remote IP adderess.
It should provide both your IP address and the remote address. You get
your address but not the remote address.
Try the pppd option :192.168.0.1 which assigns the remote the reserved
address 192.168.0.1 . This should work with such a dumbed-down ISP, no
problem.

Ok just so that you don't waste too much time....but I only can gaive _one_
hint about your etho card.
I have the very same etho card, and _one_ thing you have to do is to turn
_PNP_ OFF on it.....
Sometimes Linux ( just as it was in my case ) would recognise the card, yet
the card itself would unable to connect to the internet...:-((
after that done you can check it with ping local host....
Also in you message there is a referecen to a PnP device.... Linux and PnP
don't mix well, I think PNP was/is mostly used for the Redmont OS.....
Ok here is from a Ethernet HOW-TO and what it has to say about PnP...:-)
Just in case you do use _both_ Linux and Winxx on your box ( just like I do)
you would have to install a new driver (of course non-PnP) for this other
OS.
If this does not fix your problem, then you have one more step to do, in the
Bios change the interup for your nic from PnP to legacy ( disable pnp).
hope this helps at least with your card problem,
it could very well be that your soundcard has the similar solution.... but I
don't know since I'm not using sound ( not even under Windows) on my
system...........
So you might have to read the HOW-To in order to get the answers you are
looking for..:-))
All the best in your adventure into Linux world......:-)

=========
3.7.1. Linux and ISA Plug and Play Ethernet Cards
For best results (and minimum aggravation) it is recommended that you
use the (usually DOS) program that came with your card to disable the
PnP mechanism and set it to a fixed I/O address and IRQ. Make sure
the I/O address you use is probed by the driver at boot, or if using
modules then supply the address as an io= option in /etc/conf.modules.
You may also have to enter the BIOS/CMOS setup and mark the IRQ as
Legacy-ISA instead of PnP (if your computer has this option).
Note that you typically don't need DOS installed to run a DOS based
configuration program. You can usually just boot a DOS floppy disk and
run them from the supplied floppy disk. You can also download OpenDOS
and FreeDOS for free.

Hi there...
Lets start at the TOP... I am a 7 day old Red Hat v6.0 Newbie! and I need
alot of HELP!
I will say this... RH60 was a Very Sweet Install! I like it!!! I have a
friend that is
just learning also and he showed me how to get into the XWindows and to use
Gnome and KDE.
Interesting! I think! I kinda like it, a little different then the
Windozzze, but I hey,
at least it is not owned by Billy!!!
I will list what I have in my system and all the questions that I have
after... (with
more questions later)
Pentium 100 Mhz
32 MB RAM
1.02 GB HDD (950 = RH60 / 50+ = Swap)
3" Floppy
Trident 9685 (PCI)(on a 14" VGA - 640x480)
D-Link DE-528CT (PCI NIC)
3-COM 3C509B-TPC (ISA NIC)
SB-16 (ISA)(Model CT-1740 w/ISA)
SB-CDROM (2x attached to SB-16)
Dexxa 2 Button Mouse (Serial)
Now that I have that out of the way... Here is what I need to know. I have
Win98 Box
also, and wish to have them both (Win98 & RH60) as an internal network.
Plus I want
to be able to serve the internet from Linux to Win98. I would prefer to use
the NAT
method. I am on the @HOME Cable System here in Ontario.
Here come those NEWBIE Questions.... and if you can answer these in DETAIL,
I would be
greatful to you... Thanks in Advance!!! [;-)
Questions :
1) I have a DE-528CT NIC. I have the Driver from D-Link. I don't know how
to compile
it into the Kernel. Can someone please outline this for me Exactly Step
by Step?
2) I have the 3C509B NIC and can not seem to get it to recognize that it is
there.
Any ideas? I tried using the "NETCONF" and "NETCFG" to set it up as
eth1, (as
eth0 should be the DE-528CT NIC) I used the 3c509 driver for eth1 and
left
all the other boxes empty.
3) I would assume that eth0 should be DHCP'ing its info from my @Home
server, and eth1
will have its own IP. (ie: 192.168.xxx.xxx) But so far NOTHING!
4) I used the "SNDCONFIG" to try and configure my SB-16, but did not work.
Here is what it said...
+------------------------------------+
A PnP sound card was found in your
system. The details are:
Model: CMI8330. Audio Adapter
[OK]
+------------------------------------+
When I used to have this card in my Windozzze box, it was NEVER a
CMI8330, it
always automatically came up as a SB-16. I don't get it... but
anyways,
When it gets to the part where it tests the WAV Audio, it works... But
when it gets
to the MIDI Test, it FAILS. So I do a Manual Config on it and go to
the Sound
Blaster 16 setting, I set it up with the following information :
IRQ=5 / DMA-Low=1 / DMA-High=5 / I/O=220 / MPU-I/O=330 (as it is
hard set
on the Card...) If you are not familiar with the card, please visit :
http://support.soundblaster.com/specs/audio/sb16/ct1740.html
After I set it up on the Sound Blaster 16 configuration, I no longer
hear the
WAV Audio, but now the MIDI works... I don't understand it ????? And
when I reboot,
I get :
"Finding module dependencies"
"conf:4: missing module argument"
"can't open [FAILED]"
"Loading sound module"
"conf:4: missing module argument [FAILED]"
"Loading midi module"
"conf:4: missing module argument [FAILED]"
5) How do I get it to recognize the CDROM on the SB-16 ISA Bus?
6) Is there a way to Auto Mount these Devices? (ie: Drive A:/ and CDROM)
Well.... If I can get all of these working... I am sure that I will have
more questions
down the road. But I would be Very Happy if anyone could help me with any
and/or ALL of
these issues. Again... Thanks in Advance.
Thanks from another linux newbie,
Kasey (aka - ^KC^)

I am evaluating XLink to see if we will buy it at work. I have it set up at
home on a box running win98. I also have a separate machine running Linux.
I have a10Mbit hub between them using TCP/IP.
linux: 10.0.0.1 name: dually
win98 : 10.0.0.2 name: Scotthome workgroup:WORKGROUP (default)
The Xlink tool XOpen tries to do a remote shell command to the linux box to
create an Xterm back on the win98 machine. I can type "xterm -display
10.0.0.2:0" on the linux box and get a working Xterm on the win98 box so
that is not the problem. The problem is getting a remote shell from the
win98 box to give the same command.
I am running Suse 6.0 and looked in /var/log/messages and see that after I
try the remote shell command from Xlink's Xopen program that it says in the
log
... in.rshd[1973] connect from 10.0.0.2
The file /var/log/warn says nothing about the connection.
XOpen complains that my connection was closed and that I need to check my
host address or extend the connection time. Neither of those suggestions
make sense because my linux log (the host) tells me a connection was made
and it fails way before the 60 second timeout.
Here is the ~/.rhost file from my account on the linux box. It has
redundant entries because I am trying anything that can possibly make it
work.

Hi,
I have a problem with my Linux system at home - it's a P-II 350, 64MB
RAM with an external 28.8 modem, dual boot - Win98/Redhat Linux 6.0.
When I am in Win98, I have no problem dialing up to my ISP and get
connected.
However, when in Linux, I use 'kppp' to dial in and it fails. It gets
successfully past the 'connect' and 'user/password' authentication (both
when I specified 'script-based' and 'PAP'), but when pppd starts, it
times out, complaining that the configuration requests that it sends to
the ISP side are not answered. I can see on the modem lights that it
talks with the other side.
I tried different servers at my ISP and the behavior is the same, so I
assume that the problem is either on my side, or that all the ISP's
server are configured wrong from Linux ppp's point of view.
However, kppp does not provide any parameters that will affect the
behavior of pppd in that aspect.
Question is: How can I debug the ppp session so that I have some details
when calling my ISP?
Thanks.

The problem has been resolved (Thanks Leo Butler!). Here's the solution:
(1) edit the file /etc/syconfig/network-scripts/ifup
(2) search for the dhcpcd line and add the "-h {hostname}" parameter to
it, where {hostname} is the name that Rogers@Home has assigned to your
machine (usually starts with a "cr" followed by some numbers and a dash
a letter, I believe, such as "cr1234567-x")
(3) restart the computer; or run ifdown, followed by ifup within the
