    Hello,
I have just gotten my ppp link up. And I can
ping/telnet/rlogin/ftp to anywhere via IP. But can't seem to do so via
a name.
I do have dns set up. My nsswitch.conf file contains dns in
the hosts line. I can do nslookups till my hearts content. But when I
try to PTRF (see above) to a name. It always core dumps.
         Can anyone help me?

I am using pump 0.6.7 to try and connect to the internet using DHCP via
a USWest DSL line. When I run "ifup eth0", It says "determining IP
information for eth0", then after a minute it returns "operation
failed." The DSL modem lights up for that minute when it is trying, so
I beleive that the problem is that I am getting no response back from
the DHCP server at USWest. I have tried sending it the hostname, but
that doesn't seem to work either. Thanks.

Hi all,

I tried using wvdial with pppd 2.2 patch level 0 and all works fine up to
the point where pppd should be initiated. I get the following:
--> Starting pppd at Mon Aug  2 10:25:05 1999
--> PPP daemon has died! (exit code = 1)

>From syslog I have:
Aug 2 10:25:05 cynique pppd[4702]: Failed to open /dev/modem: Device or
resource busy

Here is my options file:
lock
defaultroute
noipdefault
modem
/dev/modem
115200
crtscts
debug
passive
asyncmap 0

I removed lock, didn't make a difference. Any help appreciated.

I had the same problem.
I believe I corrected this by changing a selection in the smb.conf file.
Read the discriptions that came with the smb.conf file and check
/var/log/samba/log.nmb and log.smb.
If the log files are set it will tell you what condition in the smb.conf file
needs to be change.

You are trying to configure Samba are you?

Date: Wed, 04 Aug 1999 09:50:50 -0800

Hi! this is a repost, but I changed the subject line b/c I
realized I was looking for file transfers -- not file
sharing.

I have a windows 98 machine and a linux machine side by
side. I plan to eventually (when
money permits) put a network card in each to network them.

In the meantime......I would like to be able to share files
back and forth using a serial cable
connected to the back of each machine. I don't really care
if the method is as simple as ftp, or
a direct file transfer, I just need some good way (i would
settle for half-way decent) of getting
the files from one machine to the other without burning
CD's.

I have read the HOWTO for SLIP, but it doesn't seem like
exactly what I'm needing.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Is this even possible?

I'm running WIN98 on a P233 and RH5.1 on an AMD 486 if that
makes any difference.

Thanks, Eric

I use the following in my ppp options (/etc/ppp/options) file when starting
pppd:

chat -r <report file> -f <chatscript file>

My chat script file:

TIMEOUT 5
"" ATZ
OK ATX0M0\\V1Q0E1S0=0&C1&D2S11=55
OK ""
TIMEOUT 60
"" ATDT5941049
REPORT CONNECT
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT "LINE IN USE"
CONNECT ""
ogin: <username>
assword: <password>

Note the \V1 in the AT init string - this instructs your modem (hopefully it
works on yours) to display detailed connect info.

Read the man page for chat it has all the info you need.

The report file will contain the CONNECT string from the modem which you can
then parse to determine your connect rate TX/RX etc...

The following script will parse the report file and email the CONNECT string
to marc:

cat /tmp/chat.report | mawk '/CONNECT/ {print ("Subject: CONNECT "$6"\n")}'
| sendmail marc

My ppp options file (/etc/ppp/options):

/dev/ttyS0 115200 crtscts
modem
ipcp-accept-remote
ipcp-accept-local
demand
idle 600
holdoff 30
defaultroute
connect '/etc/ppp/connect'

The /etc/ppp/connect script (last line) contains the chat command followed
by the command to parse the report file for the connect speed.

My system:
Linux 2.2.6 (with ppp-on-demand enabled)
chat 1.17 (from chat man page)
pppd 2.3.7

Are you asking if you can use 1) two different servers for the
resolver or 2) two different servers for a for your own dns?

1) /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 192.168.1.2
nameserver 192.168.1.3

2) BIND 8
zone "your.net" {
        type "slave";
        file "sz/db.your.net";
        masters { 192.168.1.2; 192.168.1.3; };

Subject: Looking for advice on mounting drives over the Internet. . .
Date: Wed, 04 Aug 1999 11:28:18 -0800

Hello Everybody!

I am looking for some advice on how to best go about mounting a shared
drive over the Internet. I currently have it running using Samba over a
VPN, and although it works it is very slow. The remote site's
connection to the Internet is with a standard modem (33.6k/56k) and the
local site's connection is with an IDSL line (128k).

I am new to Samba so I do not know if I have it setup correctly. As I
said it does work, it's just slow. Can someone perhaps give me some
tips on how to best configure Samba for sending over the Internet? Or
is this just a 'Bad Idea' to begin with? Is there a better way? NFS
maybe? I've heard that NFS is insecure which is why I didn't choose it,
but how about if it's run over a VPN? Other choices?

Unfortunately, the mounted drive will be accessed by a Win95 program, so
I cannot just use ftp, rcp, scp or another similar transport.

I would like to stick with free software as this project has a very
small budget (hence the modem at one end) but I can spend some money so
ANY suggestions or advice are greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!!

Crossposted-To: microsoft.public.frontpage.extensions.unix

FrontPage will not work with NFS on a RedHat 6.0 system with a 2.2.x kernel.
2.1.x and up did away with the old locking emulation from 2.0.x. The only
locking available in 2.2.x is the real BSD file locking. Anything compiled
with the old libraries using the old routines will not be able to read or
write to an NFS share.

Until RTR recompiles the FP binaries with the new RH6.0 libraries, FP is
unusable with anything NFS.

If you call RTR, they'll tell you that since Microsoft hasn't said
specifically that RH6.0 is supported, they are not allowed to recompile and
redistribute anything yet. They know of this problem, but they just can't do
anything about it.

So it's up to Microsoft to give them the go on RH6.0.

All the best --

Subject: problems with dhcp and nis
Date: Wed, 04 Aug 1999 21:20:28 +0000

Hallo ALL,

At the moment, I'm trying to set up a workstation in a bigger network
enviroment. I use the SuSE 6.1 package. For my local workstation I use DHCP
and to login at this workstation I use NIS. I put the correct parameters in
the configuration manager (Yast), but I still have some problems. Within
booting, I cannout mount NFS directories directly in the fstab. I only can
mount it, when I login as root of this machine, and mount it manually via
mount -t nfs server:/blubb /blubb (for example).

And I have another problem too: I can only login as a 'normal' user
('normal' users get their passwords from the ypserver, and the server works
fine) when I first logon on the machine as root and restart the ypclient.
Any hints?

I'm very concerned... only two days left to set this machine up.

Thank you for your reply.

Do I have to use DHCP? I thought I can use the static IP.

Let me give more information and hope someone can help me. I need to get
it done ASAP or my daughters will bother me everyday for the internet.

1. I use two 3COM 3c509 ISA NICs. Both are not plug-n-play and I set
their io and irq with the DOS install utility.
2. Right now I can ping my local network PCs and they can share their
HDs.
3. I can't ping or connect to internet.
4. I setup with static IP.
