But I only know for Netmeeting.
Didn't ever try IPhone, but if you find out its used ports, and forward them

there should be no prob too !

Hi Linux Netters,
I managed to connect through a dialup PPP using wvdial -- a wonderfull
PPP with an auto reconnect feature. Aside from using wvdial, I am also
using a free dynamic DNS service provided by justlinux.com. I
downloaded a copy of jlclient-1.1.tar.gz utility from www.justlinux.com
to updating the dns. Unfortunately, this jlclient does not automatically
update the DNS when wvdial reconnect. In other words, when the ISP
disconnects the line and the wvdial kicks in to make a dialup
connection, the DNS did not get updated with the new IP. So, how can
one use the wvdial to let the jlclient update to the
dyndns.justlinux.com so that the new IP gets registered with the
dyndns.justlinux.com?

You would have to own the domain. ie home.com, or you could register your own

Can anyone point me to some HOW-TOs or FAQs on basic networking? Although my
BIOS,Windows and Linux all seem to accept that I have a network card, Linux
doesn't seem to want to do anything with it. I am trying to connect to a
3Com OfficeConnect Hub.
Under windows I simply have to point my browser to 192.168.1.1, and i
connect to the net through that, so i don't have to worry about ppp and
dial-up stuff - or do I? KDE unhelpfully informs me that it has been 'unable
to connect' - it also reports that it knows about and has the IRQs,etc, for
myD-Link ethernet card?
Thanks in advance,

FWIW, you're *not* trying to remotely log in as 'root', are you? That
user is normally specifically blocked by telnet and rsh.
rsh uses rshd (a.k.a. in.rshd), the RSH daemon. It'll have to be enabled
in /etc/inetd.conf on the server side. Note that changing inetd.conf does
not cause it to be automatically re-read ('killall -1 inetd' afterwards).
telnet, 'natch, uses telnetd.
Check your system logs (/var/log/messages, /var/log/secure) on the server
side. If it's TCP wrappers blocking the connection, check /etc/hosts.deny
and /etc/hosts.allow, and be sure that you're not blocking the client
machine; if it's just that the daemons aren't running, start them; if it's
that you're trying to remotely log in as root, switch to ssh/sshd (which
will allow this, methinks).

The ability to browse on a Windows network is based on a lot of factors and is more
difficult with tcp/ip. Is there an NT
server on your LAN? Did I understand you to say that the workgroup is the same for
the Linux box and the Win box? Do you
have browsable for at least one share on the linux box? What distribution (Redhat,
SUSE, etc) are you running? Have you
applied the latest SAMBA update from you distribution's web/ftp site?
Assuming no NT server or other legitament browsemaster on your LAN, set the Win box to
enable browsemaster under properties

If you have Red Hat and want to get back on the net, go to this site.
http://www.control-escape.com/lx-internet.html The only other things I had
to do is run setup in my BIOS and put the "Plug and Play OS" setting to
"No" and then in Red Hat's Modem Configurater select which com port my
modem was on in Windows. They didn't match up by the way, mine is on com 3
in Windows so I chose cua2 but that didn't work. So I tried cua1 (com 2 in
MS-DOS) and changed the init string in network configurator to AT&F2 and
all is well. Let me know if this helps you.

I think you must control if your ISP isn't using PAP instead of CHAP as
authentication protocol. I say this, because this was the solution for my
connection problem. So, you must ask at your ISP what kind of authentication
protocol he is using (OR PAP, OR CHAP).
The best installation guide is:

The problem I had with that was the standard POP3 servers want to find
the mail in /var/spool/mail/user, and Qmail delivers to ~user/Mailbox
or ~user/Maildir/.
There are patches to IMAP-4 and qpopper on the Qmail Web site but I could
never get any of them to work. There seems to be an undocumented thing
(people get testy if you call it a "secret") about informing the
POP3 servers of what kind of authentication to use.
I use shadow passwords and that wasn't one of the options.
So I added dot-qmail files pointing to /var/spool/mail/user
for those users who wanted to use POP3, and ran the stock server.

env is a command to run a program in a modified execution environment.
This invocation discards whatever environment variables it inherited (-)
and adds a new, very restricted command search path. It then invokes
tcpserver in such a way that it will wait on the pop-3 port, and
offer incoming connections to qmail-popup. The args passed to qmail-popup
tell it what name to call itself, how to check incoming passwords,
and use qmail-pop3d to perform the POP transactions. The "Maildir"
tells qmail-pop3d you are using D. J. Bernstein's Maildir mailbox
format instead of the (poorly designed) standard "binmail" format.
The '&' tells the start script to run the env command in background.
This FAQ entry is an extremely terse way of saying, use my special POP
server via my special internet daemon, with my special mailbox format.
D. J. Bernstein has provided some really great software here.
Unfortunately, it doesn't come with the popular Linux distros because
its license agreement isn't compatible with that.

Start scripts go in different places in each Linux distribution.
In Debian, it's /etc/init.d/ and they must accept arguments like start,
stop, restart, and reload. In Red Hat, it's /etc/rc.d/init.d/.
Find where your Linux distribution starts daemons like Sendmail,
and you could stick the big "env" command from the FAQ into it.
You'd have to read the tcpserver documentation to figure out what that
script should do to *stop* the tcpserver that's listening for pop-3,
since that seems to be missing from the FAQ.

under Red Hat Linux 6.0 I try to get a connection with the Internet (ISP

I think that my configuration is OK; but there is a problem when pppd

By "Logging on to Network" when the kppp program try to start pppd "Starting

the following message appears:
timeout expired while waiting for the PPPinterface to come up (but dmesg |

The content of the log file PPP-lofgfile is:
Aug 8 20:01:26 localhost pppd[695]: pppd 2.3.7 started by root, uid 0
Aug 8 20:01:26 localhost pppd[695]: Using interface ppp0

Aug 8 20:02:02 localhost pppd[695]: Connect time 0.6 minutes.

The mount options are:

Everything is OK under 2.2.5.
Any clues?

I'm not sure what exactly the problem with various hosts working or not, it may be
timeouts while accessing nameserver for example. As for the ppp compression modules -
here are the lines you should put into your /etc/conf.modules to enable ppp
compresssion _and_ avoid these messages:
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate

You're assuming standard netmask. If his netmask is anything up to
0xfffffd00 (or 255.255.252.0)(or /30), both 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x
will be on the same subnet. That might be a solution, too.

A user under linux does not automatically have samba access.
Things to check:
1. is the ip adress of the NT machine (+ name) in /etc/hosts ?
in /etc/smb.conf:
2. is the ip adress (or name) mentioned at 'hosts allow ' ?
3. how is 'security = xxx' set-up (probably as 'user')
Probably your main problem (it was mine):
Despite what smb.conf says: set 'encrypt passwords = yes'
set 'smb passwd file = /etc/smbpasswd'
now from the prompt, run 'smbpasswd' or 'smbpasswd <user>'
BTW: look at smb.conf: you can let a NT machine do the authorization.
set 'security = domain', and the pop-up box will not appear.
But then again, you may not want all users to access your linux machine.
Good luck,
Piet.

Midnight Commander (mc). It probably came with your distribution, try
typing "mc" in the console.

Subject: Hub problems?
Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1999 22:25:37 -0700
Hi all.
Yesterday I got myself a small 3com hub (Officeconnect TP4) to connect
my PC to an Apple mac because I want to be able to exchange files and
share my cable modem between the two. Both have working NICs and
the connection to the hub seems ok. The line led goes on and when I try to
ping or do anything the network activity led flashes, but there's one small
problem: the packets I send from either never reach the other computer.
(I tried running tcpdump under Linux and saw nothing come in) It's an IP
network btw, and I've given my PC the address 192.168.0.1 and the Mac
192.168.0.2, both with 255.255.255.0 for a netmask. I'm pretty new to this
networking stuff so I am probably doing something wrong, but what? Does
this sound familliar to anyone?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: ethernet card problem!
Date: Sat, 07 Aug 1999 16:48:27 -0700
I have succesfully and without a problem configured two linux boxes on
my home LAN, but this third one has been a problem. Everything has been
checked twice, the cableing, the card itself and all configuration files
and parameter, and I don't see a problem. The card is detected at boot
time with unique irqs and the correct io address, but the problem is it
receives no data. Ping transmits but receives nothing. I also ran
tcpdump on one of the other machines and it receives arp commands from
this faulty machine and replies, but the faulty machine never reacts. I
have completely run out of things to try and do. I know the ethernet
card works because I have swapped them around. What could possibly be
wrong? Please help. Pete Johnson
