maybe you should write a script that ping one computer from every class
a or b net and
save the percentage of successful pings. then you could ask your isp to
pay this same
percentage of your bill since they only provide that amount of service
to you :-)

Subject: /etc/pap-secrets: What if my userid has an "@" symbol in it?
Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 03:48:00 GMT

My ISP recently changed our PAP login from "userid" to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]".
This works fine under Win95/98/NT DUN, but my /etc/pap-secrets refuses to work
with an @ symbol in the userid, presumably because the @ symbol is a reserved
word in the linux world. I've tried everything from encasing the whole thing
in quotes (like "[EMAIL PROTECTED]") to sticking back and forwardslashes
before the @, (like "userid\@domain.com").

Can someone tell me the correct syntax to get my PAP working with an @ symbol
in the /etc/pap-secrets file? Any help would be appreciated.

        I too am new to Linux, so I'm not sure that this is all that can be

go through the Firewall-HOWTO and try to set that up), but it's a good

Try experimenting with different MTU and MRU settings
(parameters to pass on to pppd - depending on the
distribution, there are tools to make this sort of
tweak a breeze). I have mine set to 296, which allows
for reasonably snappy interactive (telnet/ssh)
performance, at the price of a small percentage of my
download speed.

Hi Matt,

This is a posting I made to a different newsgroup, hope it is of help to
you
-/renji

==============
==============
==============
I have managed to get dialup working from the BASH prompt outside of X.
You may have found your answers already, but here's how I did it.

1. There should be a script in /etc/ppp/peers, called VSNL ( my isp
is called VSNL ) which contains the connection info, in my case, it was:

=================
ttyS1 19200 crtscts
connect 'usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/VSNL.chat'
noauth
noipdefault
debug
defaultroute
=================

The first line indicates the modem settings ( ttyS1 is the
port, 19200 is the speed and crtscts is the flow control
setting ). The next line makes the actual connection, and invokes the
chat program ( or any program as specified in the parameter ) to
go thru the authentication routines. There was a great deal of trial
and error I did here, which basically involved using the debug settings
and studying the error file ( /etc/ppp/connect-errors ) to figure out
the response strings and write the chat script accordingly.

The chat script, in my case it's /etc/ppp/VSNL.chat, gives the text
expected from the server and the response to be given.
My script looks something like:

=================
Say "Dialing\n"
ECHO ON
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT "ERROR"
ABORT "BUSY"
ABORT "No ANSWER"
"" "at" <--- Send an initialization at command
OK "at&d0&c1"
OK "atx0" <--- Turns off "wait for dial tone" flag, may not be
required for you.
OK "atdp1111111" <--- NOTE replace 11111111 with youer ISP dialin number
CONNECT ""
"Checking authorization, Please wait..." ""
"Username:" "raju" <--- Replace raju with your userid.
"Password:" "gentleman" <--- Replace gentleman with your password.
=================

Your chat script will undoubtedly be different from this. What you need
to do is try to connect, when it fails, check the
/etc/ppp/connect-errors file for the string you sent and the error
message recieved, or the string you received and the response you should
have given, and modify your chat script accordingly. The format of the
above chat script file is very simple, as you may have guessed. It's
just a sequence of "expected string" "response" pairs. The expected
string may or may not be in quotes, you could play it safe by putting
them all in quotes.

To connect you give the command:
bash> pppd call VSNL

To confirm if you are online, try:
bash> ifconfig

To hang up do:
bash> ps -A | grep pppd
This give syou the PID of the pppd process, then say:
bash> kill -HUP 1111
where 1111 is the PID of the pppd process.

Once you are online, you can connect to any site, as long you have your
name resolution set up as well. You need to get the address of the DNS
servers from your ISP and add the following entries to your
/etc/resolv.conf file:
===========
domain vsnl.net.in
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
===========

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy are the IP addresses of your
primary and secondary DNS servers respectively, that you have obtained
from your ISP.

This is by no means authoritative or conprehensive, just my experiences
as an amateur. There might be better ways of doing it, which I would
like to hear of from someone more expert than I. In any case, hope this
helps you.

Subject: Can't get 3c905b working...HELP????
Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 05:22:00 GMT

Sounds like a basic enough question, but I swear it's driving me
nuts...First off, I have an Abit BP6 w/ a 3c509 and 3c905b. The 509
works fine and I can't get the 905 to work with the 509 or by itself.

First off, I did turn off plug and play in the bios.. didn't work with
it on, obviously.. Also tried turning on and off plug and play in the
kernel. Again, no go.

I've tried compiling the drivers into the kernel and passing the
append="ether=10,0x300,eth0 ether=11,0xA800,eth1" parameter from lilo
or in the lilo.conf file. Just passing 0's instead of the irq's and
addressed didn't help either. Still no go.

I've tried compiling the drivers as modules. I can modprobe/insmod the
3x95x module just fine, but lsmod reports it as unused. An interesting
note is that /proc/ioports and /proc/interrupts had shown no signs of
eth1 (3c905) up until now. With the module manually inserted,
/proc/ioports did show the 0xA800 range being occupied by eth1, but no
interrupt was taken in /proc/interrupts.

I also tried configuring the additional card through linuxconf, but I
suspect my problem is lower level than that.

Can anyone think of anything to try? any place to look? I'm still
relatively new to Linux and have very little hardware troubleshooting
skills on this OS. Very frustrating....I wanted to give Linux a shot
mostly for the learning experience, but had enough learning from this
experience.. I'm ready to move on and learn something else. :-)

Thanks in advance..
Daniel

PS - I also tested the card on a Win98 box with no problems.

This is because you probably did not add an entry to smbpasswd for the
workstation itself. Read NT_DOMAIN.TXT (or something like that), it
tell you all about it.

Turned off pnp on the card while in the dos-setup-prog?

Have you tried to use linuxconf to set up two interfaces both with
3c509 as module?

I dont know what that produces in conf.modules, but I belive the 3c509
dont need the io value when loaded as module. This I dont know, so it
would help with feedback.

After using linuxconf, it produces what in /etc/conf.modules?

If it dont work, maybe this work:

    alias eth0 3c509
    alias eth1 3c509
    options 3c509 irq=5,10

(Look up the http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/3c509.html,
there is also a 'xcvr=' setting if you want to overide the tranceiver
set in 'default from EEPROM')

I am curious what linuxconf produces in /etc/conf.modules, and if it
works, or have to be manually rewritten.

(There is no sense in setting any value in lilo.conf if driver not
compiled into kernel.)

In the setup suggested in the above link, in conf.modules, there is no
trace of io=* value

The card activated is one step. (insmod or via lilo or whatever).
The second step would be to give it values, ip-adress, mtu, and so on.
That is done with ifconfig. In redhat the script /sbin/ifup and
/sbin/ifdown is the interface which handles the ifconfig things. How
that is done on debian, I dont know.

Give yourself a proper name. like anything, but not 'localhost'.

>/etc/hosts

And add that name here if it is connected to an ip-adress.

OK

And setup  /etc/host.allow
           /etc/host.deny

Ok, i guess.

Again, give yourself a proper name. HOSTNAME=localhost does not sound
(or work) good. I had a longer rant on this 14 days ago or so..
