Certainly sounds like a DNS lookup timeout causing unnecessary delays
somewhere here. Try posting your /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf files so
that we can check if something-DNS is causing your delays.

use smbclient or smbmount, depending on what you want to do. What do you
mean by, "login NT domain as a client" anyway?

What do you mean by gateway? Will you be using IP masquerading, or is this
an actual routing gateway among computers with real internet addresses?

Well, it souds like /etc/sysconfig/network is set up with lo as the default
gateway device. Try changing the device to eth0 or eth1 (you do have more
than one ethernet card, right?) Check /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and
make sure the devices are set up correctly. Finally restart the network by
issuing /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart.

Good luck,
John

Yep. As I mentioned, the Win95 setup on the 1.4 machine (the other
Win95 box) is absolutely identical to the working Win95 box (1.2)
which I am posting to you from as we speak - meaning, yes, gateway
1.1.

I just wanted to know how could I setup Linux to work as an internal pop
server and smtp server in order to have e-mail within a LAN. The other
computers are using Win '98, so the idea is to use Eudora or Outlook to
check for the e-mail that will hopefully be on the Linux box. Thanks,

Mike,

Just telnet into your linux box from your Win95/NT box and start/stop your ppp
connection from where you sit. (I made a couple of scripts called ppp-on and
ppp-off to do the job - it's been a while, but I think I found how to do this in
the PPP-HOWTO ;-). You might want to look at diald also.

When I was setting up my PPP connection I found that part of my problem
was fairly simple, in that all I had to do was to add a couple of letters
to the ogin part of the login script so that it was the same
as, myISP login and the ord part of the script to
Password. You should be able to use minicom to get the correct info
that you need. You might try this.

Open minicom and type:

ATDT + your ISP phone number
wait for connection and then enter username and password.
be sure to note what the login prompt and password prompt are.
such as : login or aol login Password or
password
you will need to use the same as what you recieve in order to set your
PPP connection.
Also be sure your resolve.conf file has the correct DNS addresses in it.

Good Luck

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks to Mr. Administrator, I finally got a D-link 220E card to be
recognized by turning off p-n-p and setting an address of 300 and IRQ
of 9 (after saying "screw it" and reformatted and reinstalled Linux).

dmesg | more sees it and ifconfig says:
inet addre:192.0.0.3 Bcast 255.255.255.255 Mask 0.0.0.0
UP Broacast Running Multicast MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:52 errors;0dropped; 0 overuns
TX pactes:170 errors:0 dropped:0 overurns
Interrrupt:9 Base addresss:0x300

My problem is I can't see any HOWTO that describes Network
Configurator. I want this Linux box running 2.0.32 on a 586 with 24megs
of ram and hooked up to a LAN with a hub and two Macs. I set up this
box with an address of 192.0.0.3 and tried pinging my Mac and
vice-versa.

After checking that my cables are intact and actually connected (green
lights on both ethernet ports), I've got to believe I'm doing something
stupid by missing something simple.

I'm convinced I'm missing something in Red Hat's Network Configurator.
Knowing that I eventually want to run IPMasq, where can I get the info
I need? I've looked through
Ethernet HOWTO
Networking HOWTO

Is there another that walks me through this? I got this from a book so
I don't have any printed docs.

thanx, sam

Thats normal. Root can't log in.
You have to login in as a regular user, then su or su - and supply root's

Subject: Want to set up server but DSL is on a LAN... help?
Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 04:36:35 -0500

Hello,
There is probably a simple answer for this, but I felt the need to
ask. I am using Linux (RH 6.0) and am happily connected via DSL. Now,
when I look at my IP, it is something like 10.0.0.2 (LAN I assume).
I think everything I do goes out through a router of my ISP (though I am
not certain - my network knowledge is next to nothing, obviously :) ).
Is there a way I can have a server (I would like to let my friends
transfer files to my machine) through this kind of configuration? I
have another machine on hand if necessary. Any help is appreciated!

I have recently have switched between dhcpcd .70 with kernel-2.0.37 and
dhcpcd 1.3+pump with kernel 2.2.5 in an attempt to locate the root of my

connection problems. Usually after an hour, some times after 40hours of
being connected
the following error is dumped to the current console.

eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 Tx FIFO room
3068.<5>eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 Tx FIFO room

This occurs with both kernels after which the connection dies. The error
occurs sooner if I am sending data upstream, usualy via FTP upload.
Suggestions? Getting sick of
babbysitting my network status every time I try to download/upload
something.

I have a laptop using the 3c589 (3com etherlink) pcmcia-cs network
