Hello everybody.
I am setting up a network with the following nodes: 1 Macintosh, 1 wfwg
PC, and one Linux server. I know the Linux server can communicate with the
Mac using AppleTalk, and it can communicate with the PC using Samba, but
(assuming TCP/IP is working ok) is it possible to make the PC talk to the
Mac?
No need to tell me how. I just want to know if there's a way -- I'll be
able to take care of the rest. Thanks.
Chris

Okay, I got my ethernet card to work, I can ping to my other machine
with either the IP or name address. I have installed samba, but I am
not too sure how to configure it. When I go to my other machine which
has Win98, I open up network neighbor hood, go into Entire Network,
double click on the workgroup icon, double click on the icon for this
computer and it comes up with a network login box and asks for a
password. The problem is I do not know what the password is. I use the
same on e that I logged into my root account , but that did not work. I
would really appreciate some help on this problem.
Thanks,
Roger

Well my card works now. You can not use the tulip.o module as the
DFE-530TX card uses a different chip set. This is what I did.
1) I downloaded the via-rhine.c file and compiled it into
via-rhine.o
...............................(http://cesdis.gsfc.gov/linux/drivers/ethercard.html)
2) Moved the module into the appropriate directory with all the other
modules such as /lib/modules/kernel-version/net
3) added insmod via-rhine to /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file
4) rebooted
5) detects my card now and I can ping back and forth just fine.
Now, comes the hard part. Getting samba to work.
Good Luck

SIOCSIFBRDADDR - means that you have a driver in the kernel. I had once used
Realtek 8029. In the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules I've uncommented ne2000 module.
Then I (looking on the Win side of the card) set up the IO address - which
was nothing close to the usual 0x300. Then, same way, IRQ. I had dual boot
machine, so that helped. But, there is a tool which can help you in the
Linux alone. If the card is PNP try: pnpdump > /tmp/pnpcards. Then view it,
to see if your card is there. Then there are other tolls, but my level is
too low to help you. Good luck

Hey people,
First of all, don't flame me. I've posted to this group before with what
I thought was a valid question, and got rather impatient replies about
searching dejanews for the answer. Well, to tell you the truth, I don't
think my problem has easily used search keys. And I've read through the
FAQ's and done everything according to plan, but it still doesn't work.
So if you don't want to reply, fine. If you know a better place to look,
actually try to find it first, then point me there.
Here's the problem: I set up my network card with modprobe, ifconfig, and
route. But whatever address I assign to the card (connecting peer-to-peer
with a Win95 box), it resolves to my linux box. How do I know? I try
telneting to it, and it gives me my linux login prompt. If it were
working, I wouldn't get a prompt at all (since telnetting into a windows
box shouldn't give me a prompt).
For those who want the gory details:
Here's what I do:

Tim, you're so stupid. Your ifconfig command tells linux what YOUR
network address is, not the other computers like you thought it would.
That's why it telnetting to that address would make it telnet to your own
box.
(BTW, in case you didn't notice, I'm replying to myself here).
Ok--quick related question to the rest of you. Is the only place I have
to assign IP addresses on the windows boxes? IOW, do I have to tell Linux
what the IP addresses of my windows boxes are? Or does it automatically
pick it up?

1. borrow an IDE drive from a friend
2. install RH 5.1 on it (w/o SCSI support)
3. download & install new kernel and other upgrades.
4. make sure you can access SCSI drives
5. move system over to SCSI (making necessary changes to reflect
new disk layout - read Slackware instructions for moving Zipslack to
ext2 partition).
6. make sure system boots from SCSI.
7. return IDE drive
Voila! Youv'e just (a) installed RH (b) learned some Linux admin tricks
and (c) helped your friend to try out Linux.

Subject: dls faster in Windows!!
Date: Mon, 01 Mar 1999 07:27:02 GMT
Hi,
I've been using linux (RH 5.2) for a couple of months now, and I love it. I've
been able to, with help from the linux community, find a solution to all of
the newbie problems associated with making linux comfortable to work with --
except one.
My download speeds are terrible when compared to Windows. In fact, my Windows
PC delivers better performance with a 33.6k than my RH box delivers with a
56k. (The RH box also ran windows and achieved very good dl speeds). Before
you flame me please understand that I'm not blaming this on Linux, but on my
inability to make it work at it's peak. I have read a number of FAQs/manuals,
lurked in several newsgroups, searched dejanews, etc. without finding a
satisfactory solution.
Here is some sys. info:
Red Hat 5.2, kernel 2.36
Dialer: kppp (tried minicom & chat too)
Modem: Best Data 56k V.90 external on ttyS1
ppp-2.3.5-1
setserial reports:
/dev/ttyS1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3, Flags: spd_vhi
Here is what I've tried so far:
Changing mtu/mru settings (currently 576)
Using setserial to set spd_vhi
Using irqtune to make irq 3 priority 1
Passing these args to pppd:
mtu 576
lcp-max-configure 60
asyncmap 0
netmask 255.255.255.0
...and I tried some other stuff I can't immediately remember.
For all my efforts, the speed is only a touch better than when I began. If you
have any ideas, I would be grateful for them.
Thanks for your help and patience,
Dave D

Here's what worked for me:
o If you previously had an IP address on the machine, edit
/etc/inet/hosts and remove the lines with that address.
o Create an empty /etc/hostname.hme0 file. (If your ethernet
port is le0, create /etc/hostname.le0 instead)
o Create an empty /etc/dhcp.hme0 file. (If your ethernet port
is le0, create /etc/dhcp.le0 instead)
o Reboot, and the /etc/rcS.d/S30rootusr.sh script will run the
dhcpagent program to query the DHCP server. It will edit your
/etc/inet/hosts file to reflect your assigned IP address, and
thhe /etc/resolv.conf file to reflext the assigned DNS servers.
The man page for dhcpagent has some more details.

You'll probably want to create an /etc/hosts file containing the local
IP addresses and names of your other local boxes.
That is, if I'm understanding your question correctly...
