Hi,
I build a fast serial port board (sync type) for the isa slot.
Now I have the following configuration, 3 PCs with that kind of boards
on
diferent subnets and a concentrator device that makes possible that all
boards transfer to or recive from the others simultaniusly, this
concetrator acts like a hub, but the devices attached to it doesn't have
MAC addresses.
I want to make a whole net with those PCs, so I could write a linux
driver to use
my boards like a 'cua' device, but what protocol do I have to use or
how, to route the subnets to the whole net?. I can't use PPP because is
a point-to-point protocol.
Do I have to write my own interface driver, like 'eth' ones? if so,
please give me some information about how to do it, because I don't have
any :(.

Exactly the thing you should do (though not neccessary with Linux).  Indeed,
you can even use Linux to be your proxy server if you need to connect your
network to the internet as well.

I plan to install Linux by using either RedHat 6.0 or Mandrake

Which browser can I use with Linux?

I was visiting Netscape Home Page, and they have Netscape browsers for
Linux.

There are listed following platforms:

Linux 2.0, Linux 2.0 (glibc), Linux 1.2, ...

What kind of Linux would I install with RedHat or mandrake?

Can I use other browsers than Netscape? Which is most appropriate to use?

Could I also find some programs for e-mail, like Eudora, for Linux?

Hi,

we are using a snmpd to gather the load (input/output-octets) of
the networkdevices (eth0 etc..) of an x86-Linux 2.0.35-Box. 

Unfortunately the values we get with the snmp-client 
(snmpwalk moses public interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifOutOctets )
differ from the values ipfwadm -A -l 
(/sbin/ipfwadm -A out -a -W eth0 -P all -S any/0 -D any/0)
gives us. They are COMPLETLY different.

Any ideas?

I am trying to mount a WIN95 shared directory on a redhat linux box, and
am using smbmount //gandalf/cd_rom mnt/cdrom -n

The mount works fine however when I issue a ls command not all of the
files in the directory are listed!!

For example ls on the rpms directory gives me everything alphabetically
A... to E... so I cant see the sampa.rpms to re install it - arghh!!

Sometimes all of the files are listed but repeating the ls command a
couple of times reduces the amount displayed ??

smbmount v 2.0.1

When i attempt to smbumount /mnt/cdrom i get the message 
/mnt/cdrom probably not smb-filesystem
However umount /mnt/cdrom does work

This same problem also occurs on shares on the WIN95 machine, not just
the CD rom

Has anyone any ideas?

        I have the similar problem, but it's more serious, I got full 
download speed from machine A to B and got only 50KB/s from the opposite
direction. Finally, I found that one of machine with a 100/10M Ethernet
card cause the problem, it seems that if not all the cards/hub support
full duplex operation, don't turn on it in all the cards, then the problem
just gone. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Preference has nothing to do with the interfaces, per se.  It's all about
the routes.  If you are simply trying to use your ppp interface
while configuring your dsl via ethernet, make sure your default
route is pointed at our ppp device.

your routes should look something like the following for above situation:

# route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
172.16.0.254    0.0.0.0         255.255.255.255 UH    0      0        0 ppp0
10.0.0.0        0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     0      0        0 eth0
127.0.0.0       0.0.0.0         255.0.0.0       U     0      0        0 lo
0.0.0.0         0.0.0.0         0.0.0.0         U     0      0        0 ppp0

So your connect routes (10.0.0.0 in this case) will go via your ethernet
device.  Everything else will go out your ppp device.

Then, when you wanna test your dsl connection, add a route for some
internet address you know is active (let's say www.yahoo.com for grins).

Ping it via your ppp interface, make sure it's there.

Name:    www.yahoo.com
Addresses:  204.71.200.74, 204.71.200.67, 204.71.200.75, 204.71.200.68

# ping 204.71.200.74
PING 204.71.200.74 (204.71.200.74): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 204.71.200.74: icmp_seq=0 ttl=247 time=92.7 ms
64 bytes from 204.71.200.74: icmp_seq=1 ttl=247 time=177.5 ms

# route add -host 204.71.200.74 dev eth0

which will make your route table look something like:

# route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
204.71.200.74   0.0.0.0         255.255.255.255 UH    0      0        0 eth0
172.16.0.254    0.0.0.0         255.255.255.255 UH    0      0        0 ppp0

Then traceroute to 204.71.200.74 to see it gets through your dsl connection.
If it does, change default to your ethernet and have fun...If it doesn't
work, rinse and repeat.

Depends on your distribution.  On redhat based distro's, /etc/sysconfig/network

If config stands for "Interface Config."  This is the utility you to config
your interface.

# ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 10.0.0.255 up

With this route you will only get a time out, because this host isn't a
part of the subnet eth0 is connected. You should add the gateway to your
ISP with this line :

        When I run ifconfig I get this:

What's with all the TX packet errors?  Is that something wrong with my
network card?  I'm running RH5.2 as an IP Masq, and whenever I'm
access the Net with my Win95 machines, I get these long pauses and an
error like:

eth1: XMT status = 0xffff8841

The network card in question is an Intel EtherExpress Pro 10+ ISA. The
driver is compliled into the kernel.  Any help would be appreciated.

ftp.netscape.com seems to work ok, but ftp.sunet.se says 500 Illegal
Port Command!!

Hello,

I am new to Linux also and I found a book called Linux Network Toolkit
that explains step by step how to set up a Linux computer as a file and
print server to win95 clients using samba. I got the book from amazon.com
but later saw it at Fry's Electronics. I have several computers running
win95 and win98 running as clients and it works just fine. The Linux
computer will also share internet access over the network to the
clients.

My Asante Fast 10/100 uses the Digital generic driver de4x5. I have
tried to use the tulip driver with no success also. I only have one card
in my system so I can't help with multiple card problems..
