This is a repost because i simple can't solve the problem and i realy
need help with this one!

I have a problem regarding telnet. When i try to telnet from the outside

world
into my server I get a time out and that's it no login or access denied!

Tough
if I telnet from the inside it works fine!
Here is my setup:

486 firewall with 2 nic's (eth0 and eth1)
DHCPd with a cable modem on eth0 (out.side.ip.number)
eth2 (192.168.0.1) is connected to a hub providing internet to my
internal
network

Now when I telnet to the firewall's "out.side.ip.adress" from e.g.
192.168.0.4 no problem! Telnetting on the firewall machine to itself
works fine to. Now when I try to telnet form "some.where.out.there" to
my linuxbox I get a time out and nothing more, though ftp and http work
fine from anywhere!! my /etc/host.allow says ALL:ALL
and /etc/host.deny are empty!
I fixed my ip chains to accept incomming! But I not know if i did it
right since
Telnet still doesn't work!

Can somebody explain to me how I can configure my box so that I can
telnet into it from anywhere on the planet?

I tried fixing it for 4 days an gave up on it (shouldn't but no more
time)
I hope it is a simple fix :)

Thanks!

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my ppp connection?

I can connect to my isp (I've tried two)
I can ping any host on the internet

If I telnet to another box, I get a connection, but no info is retured from
the other box ie no login prompt
If i send an http request in netscape I get "contacted, waiting for
reply..."

The system was working fine, I literally booted it up one night to find
this problem. I'd been very drunk the night before, and probably screwed
with one config file to many.

Any I deas? the system in RedHat 6.0

I don't think that you want to specify the IRQ and port address for PCI
devices - unlike ISA PNP, PCI usually works. You might try this:

append="ether=5,0x240,eth1 ether=0,0,eth0"

That should look for the ne2000 at the given port & IRQ, and autoprobe
the 3c900. Then again, I may not understand the code in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/Space.c.

If you are getting these different connects with the same telephone number
then I'd suggest configuring pppd for PAP and CHAP and ignoring the prompts.
Some ISPs present prompts but look for incoming PPP-speak, discarding the
prompts and starting their PPP if it's found.

I have a network using10.10.0.xxx and a
IP Masquerading enabled for on my linux box with ppp.

to get it all working I use the following script

>ifup ppp0
>ipchains -P forward DENY
>ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ
>echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

it would be nice to not have to telnet in to start everything up

I hear some of you recommending diald, but it got too complicated
for me and I sort of gave up. I got hung on what to put for "connect"
in my diald.conf since I only use "ifup ppp0" that linuxconf made for
me. I'm also not to shure whether a script would use PAP, since thats
what works for my ISP.

Then I heard about the "demand" option for pppd, put that into my
"/etc/ppp/options" , but then "ifup ppp0" doesnt work. I still havent
figured out what to put for my "active-filter", or even if it works in
Redhat 6.0.

thanx!

Hmm I am not sure how NAT entries would help. He still needs routable
addresses on the net. If he had routable addresses he wouldn't be
posting. Now obviously his 10.x.x is routing but the ISP is masq his
address. Class 10. networks are for internal networks only (tidbit).

Is this possible?
I'm using my regular ISP here in Bangkok and for the last 24 hours I
have been able to login and do email and newsgroups. I can't browse
whatever I try. Netscape looks up the site okay and then waits and waits
at the "Connect .... waiting for reply " stage
2 other linux users here are having the same problem.
We've all been using linux for some years and have made no recent
changes to our configurations.
The ISP insists all is normal.
BUT they asked me try to login from a Windoze box which I did, and
things worked normally.
Odd!
When I dial to another ISP even with the DNS numbers in /etc/resolv.conf
still pointing to my regular ISP I can browse normally.
We are all certain the problem lies at the ISP end.
Could they be locking us out because we are using Linux? They could
detect this easily enough I suppose.
Is this possible?
All ideas welcome here or by email.
Thanks,

Subject: VLAN support for LInux!

Hi!

Does someone know if Linux support VLAN?

I like to setup a couple of Linux Servers and need VLAN support on the
clients side of this. Dosen't like to buy expensive switchs who can handle
VLAN to.=20

I like to setup this system:

  Client=09=09=09=09=09=09=09Client
--Network 1A--| =09 |=09=09 | =09 |--Network 2A
  Client | Linux Box 1 |--Server Network--| Linux Box 2 |=09Cleint=09=
=09
--Network 1B--| =09 | =09=09 |=09 =A6--Network 2B=20

I have done stuff a bit simply in my real world system you have more Linux
box connectet to the server network, and more "client network" connect to
the Linux box, and even more server network connectet to the linux box.

That I need to setup is true VLAN support so you can have clients on
Network 1A belongs to the same VLAN as clients on Network 2B, and other
clients on 1A and 2A, 1B belongs to other VLAN etc.

I also need that LInux VLAN can talk to standard VLAN like switches and
hubs with VLAN Support.

Some who know if there is any VLAN support for LInux or if some guys is
working on VLAN support for LInux?

Do you know there I can get specifications on VLAN standard?

Kind regards

//Tommy

He does-- he has helped manymany many more people than you have. In this
case he has taught them
to use the vast help facilities available on Linux ( which is often far
more efficient than asking on the news group and waiting a day for
someone to respond).
Remember the old proverb-- if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a
day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for his whole life.

The format is ( as explained in the pap-secrets file)

username remotemachinename password remoteIPaddresses

The usual setup is
username * password *
or
username * password
The * mean accept anything.
Th password under linux pppd can either be the plain text password, or
the crypt(3) hashed pasword ( ie the same form as in the /etc/passwd
file)

hi

STOP RIGHT THERE! don't go and get any of these lines in a hurry. ever heard
of ADSL - Asymetric Digital Subscriber line. It's a new service from BT,
wherewby it allows VERY high speed data access down a normal phone line so
long as you use a special modem, and your telephone exchange is equipped
with the right hardware. cost is expected to be about 40 per month, with NO
CALL CHARGES.

for more info goto http://www.bt.com/ADSL. The service won't be available
for quite a few months as BT are still equipping the first 400 exchanges,
but if you're in London, you may have had your exhange already converted.

hope this helps,

Andrew

Have a look into the logfiles while they are created (using a "tail --f ").

The server tries to resolve the name of the connecting client causing
the long delay. If you resolve all clients your troubles should be away.

Try to access the SMB Server directly instead of using
the GUI (GruntUserInterface).

You should be well able to use:

net use x: \\smbserver\share

or

net use x: \\ip.addr.here.now\share

or

or

You don't. Your company does in running MS Proxy (presumeably 2.0?).

To get outside with anything other than Port 80/tcp you need to install
a M$ Software onto the client which has to be one of [w31|w9X|wnt].

Still no see the failure of your company?

If they installed a platform independant solution they had not only
saved a lot of $$$ but every client (provided it's authorized to use
the proxy to the outside) had been able to use the gateway.

That's because M$ Proxy does no routing for anything other than
mentioned clients.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Peter)
Subject: Ipchains and masquerading problem, please help
Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 10:52:11 GMT

I'm fairly new to Linux and am using COL2.2 I have managed to get nfs
working OK between my laptop and home office machine and now want to
access internet from my laptop via the office machine.

I 'think' I have followed the HowTo's properly but still can't get it
to work, if I type /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall I get the following response
which seems to indicate ipchains is not installed properly.

/lib/modules/2.2.5/fs/config.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5/ipv6/ipv6.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5/misc/vmnet: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.5/misc/vmmon: unresolved symbol(s)
can't locate module ip_masq_ftp
ipchains: setting MASQ timeouts failed: Protocol not available
ipchains: Protocol not available
ipchains: Protocol not available

Can anyone deduce from the above what I have done wrong or not done, I
have installed the ipchains rpm that came with the distribution.
