Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 18:13:41 GMT
Hi Guys,
I have a Compaq Server with RedHat Linux 6.0.
this m/c has 2 NICs. Both are Compaq Netelligent (One embedded and
other an Add-on Card). Both are using the TLAN driver.
The problem is that if I bring down eth1 (Embedded card), I can still
connect to eth0. BUT if I bring down eth0, it also brings down eth1
severing all connectivity to this machine!
How do I get around this problem?
TIA

Hi,
Is it possible to share an internet connexion between a Linux machine
(which has the Internet acces) and a Win95 machine? Using the Linux machine
as a Firewall?
What if my Linux machine is connected to a printer and I want to use that
printer with Microsoft Word 97 Via the network from the Win95 machine. Is
it possible?
Please note that the network is already set up and it works fine under
Win95.
Thanks...

Is there a way to configure the ppp client to pipe output received by a
remote ppp server to an xterm? I need to loginto the remote server
using a secure ID password which changes every 30 seconds. It is
impossible to use a scripting method with this password. I need to
physically type a new password at the remote prompt every time I log
in.?????

No, you can't do that. You must use something like NFS or Samba to mount remote
filesystems. You could use midnight commander (MC) which will allow you to
browser remote FTP sites like local directories. Might be an easy solution.
Do you really mean you have RedHat 2.2? Or you mean Redhat 5.x or 6.0 with
kernel 2.2? 2.2 is really old, but if it ain't broke don't bother fixing it...

The whole reason I'm switching to Linux for the box connected to the
net is that I was getting constant attempts on my Win98 box, which is
connected to a cablemodem service, and therefore online most of the
time. I wasn't even aware of the attempts until I installled
nukenabber, a Win98 firewall/logger. At on point I find someone
putting an autoexec.bat file on my box that had an instruction that
would have deleted everything on the hard drive at reboot. Luckily I
was able to figure this out before I rebooted. The average person
would have been out of luck.
I have a whole (no pun intended) new perspective on security now and I
say viva la paranoia!

Well assuming it's a PCI busmastering network card, the CPU isn't the
problem. But maybe the harddisks are? 10 Mb/sec is something most harddisks
can't do well, specially with large files.
Also, to have a 100MBit network running smooth, you need to have very good
quality cable. Check the cable for the Cat5 rating. If it says Cat3, the
cable simply can't handle the data (packet loss due to interference from
the atmosphere)
And, how's the general setup and status of the network? Check the hub for
collisions, and remember even clients doing "nothing" cause traffic. This
all degrades performance. And if you are using Samba and Windows95-like
filesharing for testing... that is a very bad benchmark. Best is to test it
using plain FTP, which generates the least overhead.

Hi.
My system worked fin under kernel 2.0.36 (Suse), with Samba and
everythin going. Now I tried to upgrade to Kernel 2.2.7 (because of
improved SMP-efficiency) and here the problems are. With the module
for the Realtek 8139 Chipset I can`t even compile the kernel. After
getting the latest source code I compiled the kernel and evrything
worked fine, except. The dummy device failed and I can`t even start a
successfull PING. Has anyone discovered similar problems or even has
an solution to the problem ? Help would be appreciated very much.
Thanks in advance
Ciao

Subject: Re: Help with 2 NICs

I had the same situation this weekend -- P133 with dual 3c509Bs. This was a
pain in the butt for me to get going, since the DOS utils on the 2nd 3Com
disk kept hanging the DOS box. (Though I used 6.0, not the latest) This was
also my first run with RedHat; I'm an old Slackware fart.
I did manage to get PnP disabled, though, and after some snooping on the net
I found Donald Becker's Etherlink III Series Setup Program (which I got
here -- http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/setup/3c5x9setup.html ) which was
just the ticket. I built both the setup program and the diagnostics program
(available from same location) and found them much easier to work with than
the DOS utils (mainly because I didn't have to keep slopping the NICs in and
out of two different boxes:) ). So, if the DOS utils don't work for you, I'd
highly recommend these little guys. Code's worth studying too. Thanks
Donald!
One thing I noticed: the html page doesn't say so, but the command line
switch for the setup program to _change_ the IO, rather than just tell it
where to look for the card, is "-P" (capital P, no quotes) as opposed to
"-p" (lower case p). Say you built the binary as "3c5x9"; in order to change
the IRQ to 12 and IO to 0x220 and write it to the eeprom, I used something
like
# 3c5x9 -p 300 -Q 12 -P 220 -f -v -w
This is just an example, your settings may vary.
note:
-p 300 tells it where to look for the nic in question;
-f forces operations even if nic is active;
-v is verbose mode (I like feedback);
-w means write it to the eeprom.
Good luck, HTH

Hi,
I need to rebuild the dhcpcd-0.70 package for a redhat 5.2 system in glibc
(not glibc2) format.
I cannot do this, for i am running on a redhat 6 (glibc2) system.
I already tried compiling but the binary wont run on the other system.
Can anyone compile it for me please if you use a glibc system.
Please overwrite the options.c file with the one attached to this post, for
it contains a bug fix (the function i need)
If anyone could do this , GREAT THANX :)))
Thnx,
Terrence

Subject: ftp - controlling access to directories
Date: 30 Aug 1999 20:05:53 GMT
i have a question regarding access to particular directories when
connecting via ftp. i want to setup an account for a group of people to
be able to exchange files (without using anonymous so that can be used
for public access). i don't want them to be able to use the account to
connect via telnet so i can just set the account's shell to /dev/null or
use some other method to prevent telnet access. also, when ftping i want
to restrict their access to only that account's home directory so that
they cannot browse other directories on the box. i was looking through
/etc/ftpaccess, but didn't really find anything that looks like this
would do it. maybe i overlooked something? or...is there a way to setup
an ftp only account with which i can do this? any help would be appreciated.
thanks.

Subject: Starting Ethernet at boot in RH 5.2
Date: 30 Aug 1999 18:47:02 GMT
I have several machines running RedHat 5.2 connected on a Ethernet. In order to
make the network run I have to do the following on each machine:
1. Use 'insmod' to load the driver module for my network card
2. In the Network Configuration tool in xwindows I have to push the button to
'activate' eth0
I want to have the network start up as I boot up the machines rather than go
through this hassle every time.
What do I have to do to have the correct diver module loaded during boot up and
then have the network card activated.
I have read (and read and read) all of the HOWTOs and previous newsgroup
posting. Sombody please put me out of my misery.
Regards
Rob

Linux isn't exactly "hard".. Actually, it is really easy to operate.. the
thing is that it is so "different" from Windows that people who have no unix
experience find it difficult to use. I can usually setup anything in Linux
as quickly, if not quicker, than a Windows person making the same change in
Windows. Even something as simple as adding a menu item to the start-menu.
By the time a Windows user clicks through all the different things with the
mouse I can have open an x-term and used a text-editor to manually add a
start-menu item in the same or less amount of time. It was never designed
with ease of use for end-users in mind.. Linux is really going strong in the
business sectors.. it may never be strong in the consumer sector.. There are
always Macs and Windows for that.. Maybe Amiga in a few months, who knows..

Subject: how to set up e-mail in my server?
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 19:23:32 +0700
Hi... [?]
I have a Mandrake 5.2 using a P166 machine. Everything worked up quite well
(regarding I'm VERY new to linux). I set up the routing table alright.
I was just wondering. A friend of my mine has an email address that looks
like this: [EMAIL PROTECTED] He's a member of an ISP RadNet, with
the username "dutaint". I want to know, how to do that -- it's like his
username (dutaint) became a domain in RadNet, and his name (syafril) became
a username in it. Please tell me somebody... and please remember, I'm NEW to
Linux. So please be gentle... (:)
Many thanks before,
Eischman.

_First_, go into your BIOS settings at the startup screen (before you boot
into an OS), and disable PnP. Linux doesnt support PnP yet, and wont until
early 2000. l have a USR Internal Faxmodem, on which l also needed to set
the jumpers for the correct COM port (use your windows settings for the
IRQ and address)...watch Linux start up, it should say "16550A compatable
device found on ttyS1", or something along those lines. That "ttySx" is
your COM port (S0=com1, s1=com2.Dont try using COM3or4, its a pain in the
ass). Once you have that set up, use pppd and a chat script and you
SHOULD get a dialout. If not, you have a Winmodem, an it wont
work...you'll have to go buy a new modem to get online.
Good Luck,
Jon.
