Well, in the out-of-the-box setup for RedHat 5.2, the way they do it is
that during startup one of the scripts that runs is /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
(this is run straight from /etc/inittab). That sources the script
/etc/sysconfig/network which sets a bunch of environment variables
including HOSTNAME. Then rc.sysinit does the actual setting of the host
name and so on using the values of those environment variables using the
hostname command, the domainname command and so forth. You are free to
alter this scheme, but if you want to stay consistent with the way the
RH folks designed it, leave your inittab alone and just edit
/etc/sysconfig/network. You can probably do it even more indirectly
through linuxconf or the Control Panel, but I don't trust those (parts
of linuxconf for 5.2 are buggy).

Subject: Question - Connecting 3 Lans via ISDN
Date: Sat, 04 Sep 1999 12:35:14 +0200

Hi there,

I have a big big problem.
I have just installed 3 Networks each consisting a Linux-Server and
Windows-Clients.
Each Server has two ethernet interfaces and a ISDN-Card installed.
Now my problem:
I set up two PPP-Connections on each server so they can all connect to
each other.
This works fine for just the servers, but I also want to give the
Clients the possibility to connect to
the other servers plus the subservers on each network.
Til now the situation is as follows:

- Connection via ISDN-syncPPP is up between the 3 Servers.
- a Client-PC can ping the 2 isdn-interfaces on its local server.
- the client can NOT ping the other servers and no other external
network.

I installed IP-Forwarding / Gatewaying, and I set up routes to the other
networks.
But the dialup doesnt work when a connection from a lan is made.
Where is my mistake ?

Id be glad if you could mail me under [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I could even give you more details on the situation then.

Regards
Carsten

If you want to have a real website that the world can access from day to
day, you need a fixed assigned IP address and a registered domain name
(you don't want people to have to access your site by its raw IP
address).

Uhhh, no. I think he wants to turn SO_LINGER off so that packets left over
on a close are thrown away immediately. See setsockopt(2).

I would suggest using WVDial as it does almost everything for you.

1.Put username and password in /etc/wvdial.conf.
2. Add these lines to /etc/resolv.conf
        domain worldnet.att.net
        nameserver xx.xx.xxx
        nameserver xx.xx.xxx
replace x with the nameservers ATT gave you.

That's it you are done.

As an alternative you can use KPPP which is part of the KDE
desktop. Same idea only you check the CHAP box and away it goes.

Hope this helps.

Hi all

I'm trying to set up a virtual private network with ipip encapsulated
tunnelling - withot any success - so far.

The installation looks like a textbook sample:

Internet as a carrier

This is the configuration

Kernel is 2.2.10 on both boxes

Tunnelling is implemented in the kernel and loaded, I see the tunl0
device on both sides.

The NET3 howto tells me to assign the same local ip to my tunl0 device
as i have for the eth device, can this be correct........

ifconfig eth0 10.42.109.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

ifconfig tunl0 10.42.109.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up !!!!!!!!!!

Well, no complaints so far, BUT when the next command arrives it pukes
on me..........

route add -net 10.42.102.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw b.b.b.b tunl0
********** As the Net3 howt said..

First it complaints on the netmask, i have to replace the last 0 with
255 and try again...

route add -net 10.42.102.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw b.b.b.b tunl0

The system then tells me / network is unreachable/ Wich of
course is correct...

What am I missing or overlooking? Any hints.

I need to have the basic tunnel up and running before i can start
playing with the encryption etc..

Cheers

I am going to move to Linux, and I also need to buy a non-winmodem 56k modem
(Internal!).
I thought at SupraExpress.
There is an Italian shop which sells via Internet, and sells the
Supraexpress 56i PRO (as they say), but they swear it's not winmodem
"because it's hayes-compatible"
Can any of you expert watch the photo in attachment? I have taken it from
the shop at the tech description at:
http://www.centrohl.it/w3s/H/o7MY_lSyzqPJe5A?H?@217895?80113
(you can see there a technical description (in Italian...) which declares
it's PCI, of course disagreeing with the photo)
You can get a bigger photo at the further link "foto grande": here it is:
http://www.centrohl.it/bin/w3.exe?session.H/o7MY_lSyzqPJe5A?H?@217893?80113

There is a visible Rockwell chipset, which makes me think it's
controller-based... at least the version of the photo...

If you discover that the photo disagrees with the declared name of the modem
(and so we are not sure of which is right), can you tell me if any modem I
will see with such a chipset onboard will surely be controller-based? (I
could go in normal shops and watch the card...)

Thanks in advance for replies!
Gabriele T.
Ps: please cut away " NoSpaM " from my e-address to reply me directly.

Ps2: In the case the links I have given you are "down", I'm sorry about it:
the shop changes the links very frequently, they were OK when I made the
post.
In case they don't work, you may need to reach them from the root of the
shop, if you want, which is in Italian... So do this:
www.centrohl.it
then click on the orange balloon: " Informatica ".
then click on the blue link in the orange rectangle: " Hardware " (in a new
window is better, otherwise a sort of frame will appear on the left)
then click on " Networking " in the newly appeared column with grey
background.
Then click on the goodie 80113: Diamond SupraExpress 56iPRO (click on the
NAME !) and you have reached the first link I gave you.
>From there if you click on " Foto grande " (=Big photo) you get the second
link.

not if you map "homes" instead of "username".

here at home I have mapped \\machinename\homes and everytime a different
user log in, it uses the correct directory.

Hi Charles

Well, BT Internet does work, but don't ask them - they will only answer ' do
you use windows or mac sir....'
Freeserve works as well but i don't use it.

I'm on BT internet with my linux suse box. Wvdial works and Kppp works.
I have not got the autoamtic diald to work but i'm on it...
BTW, the BT service offer multi e-mail addresses and fetchmail is just great.

I don't know if BT Clck doeas work though......

Cheers

Stay cool, There is a wireless internet company setting up basestations in
London. The prices will probably be around 1000 start and
99 per month for domestic users and 240 per monyh for business users.

The domestic users will have bandwith after business hours.

These connex are REAL IP connex, no dynamic shit.

BTW, the prices you got really sucks, I'm paying

2100 as startup cost
11275 per quarter ( 3 month )

2 year contract

And this is a 2 mbit permanent connection, no adsl joke but a real symmetric
connex.

Somebody gave you a really ripoff price on you leased line.

The prices i got are from 'you know who' and I'll just placed my order, so the
prices are a week old.

Mail me if you wanna know more Peter.

Cheers

You need to configure the device file with the port and IRQ that the
modem uses. And make sure the modem isn't of the "winmodem" family:

ouch.

As others, I am sure ,will point out - this is a really bad idea. Use the
private range of non-routable reserved addresses : ie
10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255 or 172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255 or 192.168.0.0 to
192.168.255.255 This will avoid many headaches later.
