Configure your .Xdefaults. It sounds like your X server (whatever
desktop you use) is not configured. The fact that you get the screen
with a moving cursor tells you VNC is doing its job.
RTFM on setting up VNC. There is a .vnc dir on the linux box that you
need to set up, as well as .Xdefaults.

Okay, I think I will give it a try. The problem is here:

Win98 use encrypted password and Win95 do not. Have a look at:

Also, check out the referring page at Microsoft.
Hope this help.

I am setting up an bootp server but I am having alot of trouble. I have
setup my bootptab file and installed a copy of slackware 3.6 in the
tftpboot directory.
I am using a TCP/IP boot disk (Dirk Kppen). The kernel loads up fine
and I get a message Loading .................., then the computer
resets. This happens on both machines. Could this be the TCP/IP boot
software's fault? Do I need some kind of ramdisk? The howto's said I can
just mount tftpboot onto another machine and install Linux into that
directory.
Have someone got a RedHat Linux 5.2 bootp server up and running? Is
there a way to boot directly into a X windows session?

Marius Bezuidenhout

Getting worse...
Now I can't even dial - the modem is mute.
In fact I can dial with minicom - no problems.
But if i try try with /etc/ppp/ppp-on, here is what I get:
Mar 12 14:09:42 localhost pppd[347]: pppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid 0
Mar 12 14:09:43 localhost chat[348]: timeout set to 3 seconds

Mar 12 14:09:49 localhost chat[348]: Failed
Mar 12 14:09:50 localhost pppd[347]: Exit.
I "played" a bit with modem commands under minicom,
recall default factory... I don't think it's important, since it seems
that W98 does that at each connection - I read that on the file
C:\Windows\K56 Serial Voice, Speakerphone.log
Anyway, I don't even know if this kind of information is relevant
at all, I'm still connection-illiterate -- even though
I have read carefully the ppp how to, but not so carefully
the serial howto, I must confess...
I have also read the ppp faq, I saw nothing really relevant...
Before I got this new problem I tried what Troels Tolstrup said to me:
>...Insert a \T0 in
>your dialup string. (if it is ATDT now then make it AT\T0DT. If you do
>want it to hang up automatically after a certain ammount of time then
>replace the 0 with the number of minutes you want. (It is not idle time,
>but the ammount of time you have been connected it counts)
but I just got an error. Maybe not exactly the same modem.
By the way, where in linuxconf I can enable PAP-authentification?
I recall a few things:
RedHat Linux 5.2, Kernel 2.0.35, Modem GVC 56K speakerphone, Isp Get2Net.
Thanks
Francois.

Subject: VNC xstartup (grey screen) - $DISPLAY problems?
Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 14:23:31 GMT
Here's what I'm trying to achieve: vncserver on a Linux box, vncclient on
a
windows box. What I get is merley a "grey screen and cross cursor"
seen from
the clinet end - i.e: no applications running. This is dispite
the fact that
my xstartup file contains the line:
afterstep &
Now, here are some
observations. The line (I assume) is identical to:
afterstep -d $DISPLAY &
which (I assume) is identical (for me) to (e.g. in one particualr instance):
afterstep -d PC007248Linux:2
None of the above seem to work.
I have put
a line in the xstartup file, to the effect:
echo $DISPLAY > ~/diag.log
and it confirms that $DISPLAY is PC007248Linux:2
(or PC007248Linux:n more
generally).
Now, after having run vncserver, it responds with something
like:
New 'X' Desktop is PC007248Linux:2
(or New 'X' Desktop is
PC007248Linux:3 or whatever)
So I try typing at the shell prompt, the
following:
% afterstep -d PC007248Linux:2
But this does *NOT* work,
returning the following:
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno
= 101
AfterStep: can't open display PC007248Linux:3
HOWEVER, it *is*
successful to do:
% afterstep -d :2
which works, opening an aftertep
session on the vnc client.
HOWEVER, I want the whole thing to be automatic,
so that
in the xstartup file can refererence $DISPLAY, by default having...
afterstep &
will "select" the vnc display appropriately, whatever # that
might be.
Any ideas?
Many thanks in advance to anyone out there who knows
what
is happening here, and is willing to offer their advice..
Steve.

Thanks Clifford:
I think you're on the right track. Here's a sample of the script
used by Win98 (provided by my ISP itself) to log on to my ISP ppp server.
Sorry, it's a bit long:
;
; This is a script file that demonstrates how
; to establish a PPP connection with a host
; that uses a menu system.
;
; A script file must have a 'main' procedure.
; All script execution starts with this 'main'
; procedure.
;
; Main entry point to script
;
proc main
; Change these variables to customize for your
; specific Internet service provider
integer nTries = 3
; This is the login prompt and timeout values
string szLogin = "name:"
integer nLoginTimeout = 3
; This is the password prompt and timeout values
string szPW = "word:"
integer nPWTimeout = 3
; This is the prompt once your password is verified
string szPrompt = "ts>"
; This is the command to send to establish the
; connection. This script assumes you only need
; to issue one command to continue. Feel free
; to add more commands if your provider requires
; it.
;
; This provider has a menu list like this:
;
; 1 : Our special GUI
; 2 : Establish slip connection
; 3 : Establish PPP connection
; 4 : Establish shell access
; 5 : Download our software
; 6 : Exit
;
; annex:
;
string szConnect = "ppp^M"
; Set this to FALSE if you don't want to get an IP
; address
boolean bUseSlip = FALSE
; -----------------------------------------------------
; Delay for 2 seconds first to make sure the
; host doesn't get confused when we send the
; two carriage-returns.
delay 2
transmit "^M^M"
; Attempt to login at most 'nTries' times
while 0 < nTries do
; Wait for the login prompt before entering
; the user ID, timeout after x seconds
waitfor szLogin then DoLogin
until nLoginTimeout
TryAgain:
transmit "^M" ; ping
nTries = nTries - 1
endwhile
goto BailOut
DoLogin:
; Enter user ID
delay 1
transmit $USERID, raw
transmit "^M"
; Wait for the password prompt
waitfor szPW until nPWTimeout
if FALSE == $SUCCESS then
goto TryAgain
endif
; Send the password
transmit $PASSWORD, raw
transmit "^M"
; Wait for the prompt
waitfor szPrompt
transmit szConnect
if bUseSlip then
; An alternative to the following line is
;
; waitfor "Your address is "
; set ipaddr getip
;
; if we don't know the order of the IP addresses.
set ipaddr getip 2
endif
goto Done
BailOut:
; Something isn't responding. Halt the script
; and let the user handle it manually.
set screen keyboard on
halt
Done:
endproc
=================
That's it. What do think? In light of this script, what changes
should I make, especially in in linuxconf or the etc/ppp files (or both?),
to get this
thing working?
I really appreciate all your help and time.
Thanks

Subject: Linux and Apache die under load
Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 16:30:47 GMT
For a long time now my website has received less that 2000 hits per day. Due
to the recent swell of Linux popularity it has gone up to about 5000 hits per
day. Ever since then I have been experiencing server crashes. I get a
message from apache's error_log that says 'Too many open files'. Postgres
usually dies horribly shortly afterwards. How can I get a look at what
programs have large amounts of open files. I'm sure that it's either
Postgres, Apache, or PHP. I'm running the absolute latest stable versions of
all three.
I use Redhat 5.2 kernel 2.0.36. My ulimit -a states that MAX OPEN is 256.
Can anyone help?

Probably not. The solution would be to retrain as necessary in proper

Thanks for reply Izak!!
I am personally leaning towards the intranet route
over using MS Exchange for this mainly cause all
the tools we need to do this can be had free or
very cheap.... i.e Linux, CGI, PHP, etc. This is
true, correct??
As I said..... we already have MS Exchange server
available and even have MS IIS server at work.
But..... the above all costs money and learning
how to do it with Linux tools is very appealing
especially if I would ever want to develop an
intranet for my church, non-profit organization,
or even my own business someday. <G>
I am still a little unclear on how an Exchange
system is different from an intranet tho. My
understanding is that Exchange is a messaging and
collaboration system whereas an intranet is just
like a miniature Internet. Correct?
Does there exist any Exchange type system that are
free and run under Linux?

Try turning on the debug option, that can get you a whole lot of useful
info. Try and find out what authentication method your ISP uses. Also, try
looking at the ISPs news groups - thay may help you in your setup. There
are also some web sites around that detail the setups required for
particular ISPs.
You can also try KPPP.
