I had problems with Win98's method of password encryption
which I fixed. Also my workgroups were mixed up.
I think I have it all sorted out now and it seems
to be working ok.
Next step is to get printing working properly.

A look at /etc/services reveals that the port is 1109...

Subject: PPP problem
Date: 5 Sep 1999 15:30:02 GMT

I have a problem with my ppp setup. When I dial in for the first time
after a reboot, there are no problems. Subsequent dial-in actions more
often than not fail. The reason for this (or rather: the symptoms) are
that pppd reports that the link is established and that IP addresses
are assigned. ping and traceroute work without problems, but IP
connections fail.

For example, when I telnet to one of our main boxes, telnet will
connect, but I do not get a login prompt. The same is true for ftp,
http, etc.

The debug output show typically something like:

Serial connection established.

Sep 5 17:18:10 electron modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-24

Apparently, the other side wants me to use some kind of compression.

Another thing which happens now and then is that the modems handshake
correctly. pppd will report "Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem", but the
IP addressess will not get exhanged. This happens less often that the
first problem.

I am running Linux 2.2.9 with pppd version 2.3.9 on a Pentium 2. There
are no network cards in the machine. I usually compile ppp as a
module, so to be on the safe side I also tried fixing it in the
kernel, but as expected, this had no improvable effect. I need a
reboot (cold or warm doesnt matter) before it will work again.

My ppp options are set to:
        lock
        defaultroute
        noipdefault
        modem
        /dev/modem
        38400

        mtu 552
        mru 552
        debug
        passive
        asyncmap 0

This problem is getting really annoying. Any pointers to the solutions
would be very much appreciated!

Hi,
Could anyone provide a historical listing of the Kernel version
(recent kernel is 2.2.10)
(not the distribution version, like Mandrake 6.0, etc).

What is the roughtly release date for 2.0 and 2.2? How fast are
they changing (presumably not too fast in order for it to be stable)?

Because a portable MP3 player cannot hold over a hundred hours of music.

I have a RIO. It's cool but it only holds about 40 minutes. With a linux
based MP3 computer, you can hold your whole collection on a single disk.

Might I offer an alternative to the ethernet. Get a right angle extender
an plug it into the MB.

I'm testing with a cheapie Amptron 9100 with CMI 8330 sound and SiS video.
At $50 a pop, you can't beat the price even though the performance may not
be optimal.

I'm not sure thats true, RH has autodetected various modems, serial
boards, network cards, etc.. for me, both plain old ISA and PNP.
True, it sometimes doesn't detect all ISA hardware all the time- but
it does detect quite a bit.

As to the original post, try adding the appropriate module to
/etc/conf.modules, with the correct port setting. (Or use Linuxconf
to create it as eth1, supplying the same info). Often thats enough
for Linux to grab the card and deduce the IRQ (but you might have to
supply that also).

Dear Experts,

I've now set up up my pppd connection which uses chap-secrets. For
some reason the connection will only work if I run the scripts as 'su -'
(simple 'su' or 'user' will not do). Of course I have set

chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd

but this has no effect. Any suggestions?

I just upgraded to RedHat 6 and now am unable to NFS mount my home
directory across a firewall. The only difference I notice is that
rpcinfo -p reports that nfsd is only using the udp protocol, whereas in
RH 5.2 rpcinfo showed both a udp process and a tcp process. I'm
thinking this is relevant to the hole that was punched in the firewall
to let me nfs mount. Two questions, then: Might this indeed be the
source of the problem? And if so, is it still possible to start an nfsd
process that uses tcp? Or do I need to find a different solution?

Thanks.

Well well well ... it's been a long time since I've needed help with this,
but somehow I think I've broken my IPMASQ ... I felt like having a little
fun, so I added a 3rd nic to my linux box (Debian 2.1) and it didn't get
autoprobed (duh -- It was soft configed), so I took it out. Rebooted the
machine, hoping things would work, and life just got that -little- bit
more complicated. My Win box talkes to my Linux box .. my Linux box talks
to my cablemodem (and beyond) ... but my Win box doesn't talk to my
cablemodem ... so I can telnet into my linux box, and then telnet/www/etc
anywhere else. My win box resolves names properly, and can even ping
(which confuses me), but it can not do anything else on network.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi!

I have a two machines, one running RH60 and the other running w95.

Everything works just fine except for some pages...

I can get to them from the linux machine but not the w95 machine.
What could the problem be? I have no idea..

And some other pages are not accessible at all.. But I know the
web-server is working becouse if I use the translation-tool on altavista
I get the text but the pictures are still missing..
I guess that could be the web-server blocking certain ip-adresses but
I'm not sure.

If u have some ideas on these two matters please mail me!
