Subject: Strange Win98-Linux networking problem
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 09:42:12 GMT

Hi everyone,

I'm having big problems getting my linux box to communicate with my Win98
machine through a crossover UTP cable. I know the hardware works because I
managed to connect the machines successfully with both of them running
Windows, but I had no luck in configuring the network with Linux. My setup is
the following

Win98 :
D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100 NIC
Adapter settings:
Connection Type= Autosense
DMA Burst Length=256 DWORDS
Recieve Buffers=64
Recieve Threshold=1024 bytes
Transmit Buffers=4
Transmit Threshold=1024 bytes
TCP/IP settings :
IP : 10.0.2.254, Netmask 255.0.0.0 (No gatway, no DNS, no WINS)

Linux :
Kernel v. 2.0.34
NICs : RealTek RTL8139(clone) or Cnet Pro-120 (having a Macronix 98715 PMAC
chip)
I tried both the above cards with no success.

Here are dumps of the various setings :

The symptoms are simple. Nothing seems to be passing between the two
computers either way. I cannot ping from Linux to Win or vice versa. The fact
that I tried two different NICs with the same results seems to suggest that
there is something wrong with my interface settings but for the life of me I
can't figure out what. Another possiblility is perhaps that the culprit is
the crossover cable. I don't know though, because as I've said above, it
works fine when both machines are running Win95/98. An interesting thing is
that ifconfig insists on labelling eth0 as a 10Mbps Ethernet even though both
NICs are 100Mbps.

I'm no network guru, although I've had occasion in the past to set up various
networks both
with and without Linux but I've never had so many problems setting a network
up. Please, if
anyone knows what I'm doing wrong, help me!

Please contact me at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

Thanks.

Etienne

what i want to do is collect mail from our isp using a linux box.
we have one email account. but several users at present we use win nt and
wingate to allow people to access the pop server.
users log in by outlook express. eg [EMAIL PROTECTED] + passsword,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] + password, so although we only have one account
they can access their own mail. what i hope to achieve is the linux box
dials the isp every hour downloads the mail. and stores it locally. I then
would like to let users connect to the linux box using outlook express to
collect thier mail. what is the best way to achieve this ? Also i need the
users to be able to send mail to the linux box which will then pass it on to
our isp's smtp server.

so far i have ppp working with diald to allow users web access from there
workstation.

I sure tcpdump -i <interface-name> & can shed some objective light on this
subject.

Subject: Ethernet NE2000 card: Tx timed out, ..... problems
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 11:39:04 +0100

Dear anybody,

I've got a problem with my Ethernet cards (which are NE2000-compatible). I
configured it on two Linux machines using the installation procedure of
RedHat 5.1 (I've installed it for a little while ago, so I'm a 'newbie').
A while ago I've bought the Linux Toolkit (6-disc-pack), which contained
RedHat 5.1 on disc two (kernel version 2.0.34) and a lot of other
applications on discs 3, 4, 5 and 6 (one of the discs also contains an image
of the sunsite.edu ftp-site.)

My home-network is _very_ small: it consists of only two computers, both
running RedHat 5.1 with kernel 2.0.34.

At installation time, the autoprobe for my networkcards didn't work, so I
had to manually fill in the address and IRQ. Fortunately I knew them,
because MicroBill Win98 told me: BASE:0x280, IRQ:09 on one computer, and
BASE: 0x340, IRQ:03 on the other (I'm not sure of that IRQ, but it said so)

When rebooting the machine, the network adapters seem to be recognized.
Here is the output of the command DMESG immediately after login on one of
the two computers (the problem with the other one is similar):

As you can see, even after I've Ping-ed, the amount of Xmitted packets is
zero.
(The IP-addresses of the computer I used for these outputs is 192.168.1.1,
the other computer has got 192.168.1.3.

When I ping to localhost (127.0.0.1) it works, and when I ping to the
broadcast address 192.168.1.255 the light on the back of my eth-card
flashes, but nothing happens and no packets are transmitted (according to
ifconfig). The only replies I get are from the same computer as they were
send from (192.168.1.1).

What am I doing wrong? I've tried all IRQ's, but none of them seemed to
work. (Some documentation said there was a FAQ in which common hardware
problems were described, but I couldn't find that 'troubleshooting-guide'
anywhere.)

Subject: ftpd and telnetd problems
Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 22:41:42 GMT

Hi all.

I'm running Kernel 2.0.36 (RedHat 5.2), and am having trouble establishing a
telnet or ftp session to my linux machine from another machine on our local
network.

I can telnet and ftp to myself from the linux box, but telnet and ftp
sessions are refused from an outside machine (all connections are allowed in
the hosts.allow file since this network isn't connected to the rest of the
world). In the logs, whenever an ftp connection is attempted from another
machine, I see an assortment of errors like:

ftpd[4776]: getpeername (in.ftpd): Transport endpoint is not connected

I had no problems telnet'ing or ftp'ing to this machine a few weeks ago.
Reboots don't fix the problem. Any ideas?

Thanks,
T.S.

Also, incidentally, (on a possibly unrelated note), whenever any other
machine pings the win98 crapbox, we get two additional duplicate packets
returned, about 1.5ms apart. What might be causing this?

486's should do fine. Only if you want to run a good web browser on the
Linux box, you have to make sure that you have enough RAM in that box. I
remember starting X on a 486DX4 with only 8MB RAM, it takes forever :)

Also, while your at it you might want to have a look at the ocs (Obsidian
communication server) Intranet stuff. It uses cgi and works quite nice,
although I have never really used it on an Intranet, I just looked at it
on my own PC. You can get it at ftp.obsidian.co.za/ocs/. Hey, its free
:)

You can also read the Intranet-HOWTO which should be in /usr/doc/HOWTO

To make a long answer short: Yes you can use 10baseT and 486's :) I did it
once, except in my case I had about 10 Windoze PC's and 1 Linux box, the Linux
box was mine and the other 10 were those of a few stuborn friends of mine :).
The windoze PC's could access a database of mp3's on the Linux box through
Internet Exploder, and make requests. The requests were played and transmitted
through a short range FM transmitter that everyone could tune their radio's to.
Now that I think about it, this might be a good idea for the office? :)

Linux is fun :)

Izak

Did you set up the /etc/atalkd.conf file correctly? I remember that the
SuSE 5.2 docs were slightly misleading. It started working when I
set the config to just a single line:

eth0

and copied the file to /etc/atalkd.conf as well as
/etc/atalk/atalkd.conf. I could not yet finally figure out which
one of these files is really used. It just happens to work this way.

Then, put a AppleVolumes.default file in /etc listing all directories
you want to give access via AppleShare for ALL users (use a tilde
to include the user's home directory).
