HELP!! I installed a 2nd nic that also use the tulip driver
and the ifconfig shows that the eth0 in slot 3 and eth1 in
slot 4 got swapped so that the nic in slot 4 is now eth0
and the slot 3 nic shows as eth0.
I've checked the hardware addresses from winnt (this is a
dual boot machine) and everything is insync with the displayed
hardware addressess.
Also the ifconfig shows the ipaddr of eth0 as 192.168....
that was the commented out ipaddr in the rc.config; so where
did this "generic" ipaddr come from??
I just got ADSL and am trying to setup Linux with the DHCP
required by the ISP; tried the setup without the DHCP client
configured and I still get my configured ipaddr ignored by
ifconfig with the physical nics swapped by ifconfig.
The Linux version is SuSE 6.1 and had no problems when just
using a modem and my 2 computer network.....Somewhere the
192..etc ipaddr is hard-coded for ifconfig, but where?
The location on the motherboard didn't make a difference
with winnt but why Linux?
Hope to see a few answers/pointers to solutions....

I know this looks like a previous post, but it is subtlely different.
I am attempting to connect to @home also, but cannot ping the default
gateway (24.7.97.1). I am however able to ping another machine on the
same network, 24.7.97.34 (this is my real @home address). I have tried
switching the addresses of the machines (thinking that maybe my cable
modem and the @home switching center have some knowledge of my address
but that doesn't seem to have any affect.
Here is my ifconfig output:

First off check your routing table. You should have your default route
(0.0.0.0) look something like the one below

Note: the 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0 are internal private networks and I
provide them just in case you also are routing internal traffic.
Once you have verified your routing table, reset your cable modem (there
should be a switch on the back which when pressed for 10+ seconds will
reset the modem completely) This is primarily so that the modem will read
your MAC address and report it correctly (thus allowing the gateway to
properly route back TO you)
At this point you should be able to route through the specified gateway
and have it recognize you.

Olicom : www.olicom.com
Madge : www.madge.com
They are stable. They are not included in the kernel.
Olicom provides a patch, whereas Madge provides a module, either in source or binary.

In that case it must be a Slackware thing too, since I do not use

My intention is to use my Linux box (Redhat 5.2 with kernel 2.0.36) as
an Internet gateway.
I am currently doing this just fine with a 10 baseT LAN.
I want to add some wireless windows 98 notebooks around the house.
I have been able to get this far installing the Aviators:
Aviator cards work in the windows 98 boxes, and I can ping from one to
the other over the wireless network.
I installed an aviator PCMCIA card in the Linux box, and installed the
ray_cs driver version 1.62 on the linux box. I can get the driver
loaded, and enable the card with ifconfig
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:8F:48:5D:66
inet addr:192.168.129.1 Bcast:192.168.129.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

I also added the route:
route add -net 192.168.129.0/24 dev eth1
Groovy. Everything works. I can ping the interface 192.168.129.1 AND
the proper LEDS are lit.
However, this card cannot see the windows 98 boxes, and vice versa,
even if held just a few feet away.
I suspect there is another setting on the wireless network, such as
encryption or essid. There is a troublesome statement on the ray_cs
web page http://world.std.com/~corey/raylink.html about
"authentication with win95" but no further information so I suspect
this is where the problem is.
Anyone know anything?

I would like to obtain the source for it so I can replace pop3d with qpopper
(popper) as there is a bug in in.pop3d which doesn't clear the lock file
after a user has finished checking there email.

I have been running this mail server for about 3 weeks now but just last
week the pop server had been stopping randomly making it so people are
unable to check their mail.
since then I have been able to track down the error, the syslog reported
this error:
Sep 7 02:44:29 mail inetd[116]: pop-3/tcp server failing (looping),
service terminated
What would cause this error and how would I fix it.
Server details: OS=Linux(Debian 2.1) pop server=Qpopper MTA=Sendmail
