Just a guess Frank but you might try looking in your pc's BIOS for a PCI
section and tell the NIC which int to use. It worked that way on my
Acer Aspire (originally had a conflict between EEPro100 and Compaq PCI
SCSI-2 ctrlr).

If the company doesn't exist you might be sol. I'd try using the old
'NE2000' compatible trick (if you haven't already).

There's the 'indistry favorites of Tivoli, HP Openview, Sunnet Mgr,
etc. You can also use Novell ManageWise but would have to do some SNMP
MIB writing.

There's the old favorite - netstat too.

Subject: Possible Routing Problem
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 16:08:53 -0500

I have a RedHat5.2 Linux computer connectted to a Win98 computer
(3C509B(linux) 5 port hub
(Assante) 3c589D (Win98)). However I'm having problems pinging from
either machine. It looks
like the problem lies with my Linux box since the hub's LED don't blink
when I try to ping the
Win98 machine from Linux (whereas they do blink from the Win98
machine). When I ping the network
(192.168.1.0) from Linux, the LED blinks (Also the Use count goes up
only when pinging the network).
So it seems that I am able to use the interface to get to the network.

Here is some info:

Win98 192.168.1.2
Linux 192.168.1.1

[root@pillow network-scripts]# route -n

          collisions:0
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0x300

Furthermore I've let RedHat's conf. program set up the interface and
route. But I've
also entered the commands from the command line:
[root@pillow network-scripts]# route del -net 192.168.1.0
[root@pillow network-scripts]# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 netmask
255.255.255.0 up
[root@pillow network-scripts]# route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask
255.255.255.0 eth0

Can anyone help me? I apologize in advance if I've made a newbie
booboo.

Thanks,
Todd.

I'm far from an expert on Linux..., I got it a week ago. But I do know that
in the redhat 5.2 distribution (kernel 2.0.36) a dhcp-client package is
included and it works perfectly: dhpcd (version 0.70).

Try "rpm -vv xxxxxxxxxxx"

You'll at least get more verbose error messages.

I would venture a guess that it's broken, like previous releases have been.

Any particular reason you're using exactly the _opposite_ configuration than
what would probably be optimal? FreeBSD is better at heavy-load networking
than Linux (by far), and would make a *much* faster NFS server. Linux is
better at running heavy applications (by far), and would (probably -- I
assume you're using NFS for *something*) make a *much* more useful NFS
client.

The fact that you're using FreeBSD clients for NFS makes me worry that those
client boxes might be web servers. Please, for the love of God, tell me it
isn't so. I ran what was probably the world's largest NFS-driven website for
the better part of a year (members.xoom.com), and let me tell ya: you do
*NOT* want NFS as a bottleneck on a large website. XOOM.com spent a lot of
time and money getting rid of NFS everywhere it could, and you'd be better
off never starting down that path at all (unless this warning comes too
late).

That will only work if Apache is what's leaving filehandles open (and even
then, only if Apache is nice enough to close the still-open file handles upon
exit).

The fact postgres dies shortly *after* Apache means that Apache probably isn't
to blame. What's most likely happening is this: Postgres eats up most/all
available filehandles, Apache notices and complains, Apache dies (and frees up
some filehandles), Postgres eats up those filehandles too, then it dies.

And, for the record, "/usr/local/bin/perl" is the *correct* location, as any

I have the same NIC and I could not get it to work. I think the problem lies
in the fact that you cannot assign an I/O address to the card. The utilities
that come with the card are very limited. I am trading the card for a DEC card
that you can assign the resources to. In all of my searching, this is the only
solution I have found.

Transfer the files using a floppy if they are smaller than
1.4M (NIC drivers will be this small). Then download and
install Sygate (www.sygate.com) on your 98 machine. (See
rockvilleliving.com, the Computer Guy for more on Linux
networking over a LAN) Sygate is a NAT program which is
better than proxy servers like Wingate. You dont need to
configure each application, you simply assign an IP address
to each machine and tell the client where the gateway (in
this case your 98 machine) is. I am doing this now over a
network. Works great. If Linux is not detecting your card,
you can use isapnptools to take a look at your isa cards.
Also, see:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/index.html for
more on NIC drivers.

huh? do you even have a clue of /usr/ vs /usr/local/ ? /usr/ is primarily
for vendor installed software, /usr/local/ is primarily for site installed
software. since perl comes out of the box on practically every linux
install (hell, debian uses it for some of it's init scripts!), it qualifies
for /usr/ that said, perl (like most other well-written packages) is happy
to install just about anywhere - the Configure script explicitly says that
installing in your home dir is fine.

I do not know what kind of book you are reading but it is /usr/bin/perl
in "Programming perl" (Larry Wall and Randal Schwartz) and in
"Perl Cookbook" (just for the record).

It is common to put it in /usr/local/bin/perl on commercial
(non GNU based) UNIXes since it is usually not a part of the standart
distribution. gcc on the such systems also usually goes into /usr/local/bin

Maybe I missed something, but I went to this site and I'm not really sure
what operating system this program runs under. It looks to me like either
Windows NT or Windows 95. I tried searching through their online manual
for the word "linux" and it came back empty.

Curious.

Subject: linux network window size defragment cause netscape to hang?
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 22:47:08 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I am running redhat linux 5.1 and netscape communicator 4.08.
Everything is fine network wise except posting news. Once
the "New Msg" button is clicked, netscape freezes. I cannot
exit from it. Simple kill <pid> does not work. Only
kill -9 <pid> can kill the process. A tcpdump shows the
fault: news server and my machine are deadlock on a
negotiation infinite loop. The following lines repeat
forever:

10:46:40.566510 news.ycc.yale.edu.nntp >
net186-83.its.yale.edu.5414: P 0:1(1) ack 1 win 64240 (DF)

10:46:40.566510 net186-83.its.yale.edu.5414 >
news.ycc.yale.edu.nntp: . ack 1 win 32120 (DF)

Does anyone know what those numbers mean?

Does DF mean defragment size? It looks like
my machine net186 wants window size of 64K
but the news server wants window size of 32K.
Why the deadlock on negotiation? How can I make
my linux box to adapt to a different window size?

I know the problem lies on my linux machine size
because if I switch to windows 95, posting news
is fine.

On the other hand, all other network functions
such as ftp, http, telnet work without any problems.
So it points that netscape application is at
fault.

Thanks for any info.

Richard

Unfortunately not! Tried it, still doesn't work. Thanks for the tip,
