It's not clear to me from what you've written what syntax you're using to
uninstall the gtk package: are you using rpm -e gtk-0.99.970925-2, or are
you just using rpm -e gtk, which would be the proper syntax to uninstall a
package?  Why just gtk for the package name?  Because it resolves any issues
about package names and changes that occurred if you upgraded the package.

You can update the database by, and I can't remember the rpm command switch
to do that but man rpm will contain the answer to that one.
