Howdy doods'n doodettes

I'm trying to install KDE, but i'm not able to make it work. I've downloades and
installed QT version 1.40. From the file INSTALL i've copied the environment stuff,
like LIBRARY_PATH etc... into my profile file, and checked that they are all ok.. i've
compiled(?) it with :

make gnu-g++-shared
make

without any errormessages...... except "enjoy qt" or something..:)

(i've also tried ldconfig at this point..)

i've downloaded the KDE RPM's, but when i go:
rpm -i -vv kdelibs........

i only get a message telling me i have to install
"qt>=1.40"

which i believe i have done..... can anyone help???
if not, how can i make sure Qt IS installed properly...
is there something i have to run while booting or something like that??
