This is the Xserver. In this case XFree86-S3 server. Release 3.3.2
> - What is afterstep ???
AfterStep is a WindowManager. Unlike Win95, X seperates its server and GUI.
This is an oversimplification, but should suffice. the WindowManager is
the Interface for X. It is responsible for drawing windows, etc.
See http://www.PLiG.org for information on Windowmanagers in general, and
plenty of information on the various WindowManagers in general. Excellent site.
Also see "man X".
> - What is startx ???
startx is a script which executes .xinit (or /etc/X11/xinit/xinit, if there
is no .xinit in your home directory.) The xinit script starts your windowmanager
and possibly other programs as well.
> - What is xdm ???
You can make it so that rather than start in console mode, Linux (and Unix
in general) can boot right to Xwindows. XDM is used to handle the logging in/out
of users if this is the case.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. If you want to see what X
applications are started when you bring up X, take a look in the
aformentioned xinit file.
