I suggest the following:
Try compiling ONLY the modules you need.
Try compiling your network cards, sound cards, etc,
as modules. Does the kernel compile? If so, you should
probably try adding those drivers you want into the kernel,
one at a time. The only make errors I ever get while building
the kernel, are from sound card files. I only get those
if I try to compile in support for conflicting things
(such as "MPU-xxx" and "MPU-xxx (Not for SB-16)" at the
same time.
