I was caught by this same thing. I finally gave up and I just use the ESC
key when the meta key is called for. Like in doing a cut and paste/replace-
I hit the Esc key, then I enter alt-%, and then the word or words to be
replaced. I follow that with the new text and hit enter. But the key to
remember here is that darn meta key. It is the Esc key and thats all there
is..!

What a life hey wha?
