Michael,

        This is not an authoritative answer, but its worth a shot. Take a
look at your XF86Config file. Look for the definitions of 'FontPath' in
it. In my case, all the paths point to subdirectories of
'usr/X11R6/lib/X11'. I would put all the gimp fonts in 'usr/X11R6/lib/X11'
in a 'gimp' directory and define it in XF86Config.
