I am trying to install RH 5.2 to a 486 laptop. My cdrom is an old backpack,
one that linux does not recognize. As a result, I have partitioned 50 mg or
so for MS-DOS, and have tried to copy all of the RPMs that I think I need
to make a bare bones linux installation.

I have made the following directories on the dos partion:

\redhat\base
\redhat\RPMS

>From my cdrom, I have copied all of the /redhat/base files to the
corresponding directory on the dos partition. I have copied all of the rpm
files identified in the RedHat install manual as being a part of the Base
system.

My install goes according to schedule until I am asked to indentify the
harddrive directory that contains the redhat installation files. I have
highlighted /dev/hda1 as the partition, the next line asks for the
directory. When I tell it to look at /redhat, an error message is returned:
"cannot find redhat installation tree on /dev/hda1"

The laptop has a small HD (500 mg), so I cannot simply copy all of the rpms
files to the appropriate directory on the dos partition.

Any ideas? TIA
