I may be mistaking here, but isn't the setup program run under DOS in the first place? What I'm saying is, to install Linux from your cdrom isn't dependant on Linux recognizing the cdrom. I'm not clear on whether you tried before to install it from the cdrom first, but if you haven't, I would try that first and save that drive space for the installion (Linux Native partitions).
