Hello John.
As to why you cant login, it would seem you are either not giving the
correct passwd, or the passwd field in /etc/passwd for root is not empty,

If you have LILO installed on your H/D and have "timeout=xx" defined, you
can do the following;

LILO: init 1 <enter>

Thats it, you will see the login prompt appier after booting, do nothing,
the system will present you with the bash prompt after a few seconds.
There is no need to login, you can now edit /etc/passwd with you editor and
remove any chars in the passwd field for root, like;

root:mPq23SMm:0:0:System operator:/root:/bin/bash
    ^        ^
Remove all the text between the to carets, making the line look like;

root::0:0:System operator:/root:/bin/bash

shut the system down reboot, now you should be able to loging without a
passwd.

If you cant enter boot params at the LILO prompt you will need to use the
rescue disk(s), at the LILO: prompt type;

mount root=/dev/hda?
Where hda? is the number of the device which contains the "/" root
filesystem.
