You guys are great. The culprit seems to be a 8 meg "core" file dated Jan 2
that filled up hda1. I moved it. I've got lots of space. So far the computer is
Linux only and dedicated to internet and hamradio.

Looking at my trace I saw a message coming in and aa6vn
actually responding. Got it ok - first one this year. Then I sent a test
message from pacbell and it came right thru.

Next I did "updatedb". Then my beloved locate command worked again.

Next I tried I tried a local check of httpd and that was ok again. A check via
radio failed but I'll test it further.
Also I have yet to get a message out from sendmail.

Anway today was a day of progress . Many thanks, Richard.
