try

startx -- -bpp 16

[replace 16 with whatever colour depth you want, depends on the card and X
server, 1Mb Cirrus 5428 cards can ONLY do 8 bits per pixel, your trident,
being PCI (therefore newer) may do better) find out what the vertical and
horizontal refresh rates are for your monitor and set those and X will work
fine]

Tip : to switch out of X without quitting, press CTRL-ALT-Fn (replace n with
whatever console you want), to return press ALT-F7 (always F7)
