Try resubscribing. To judge from the regular comments about similar
experiences, it looks like the software quickly drops addresses that bounce,
so even short interruptions in your e-mail connectivity can cause you to
lose your sub. This is only a guess, though ... does anyone know for sure?

If people get the login: prompt, then telnet itself is working. You can
check this by looking for messages from telnetd in /var/log/messages . The
problem you are having is with login, and that's where you should
concentrate your efforts.
Since you seem to be able to log in okay from the console, a lot of possible
causes are eliminated. The only thing I can think of is the possibility that
whatever people are trying to log in from (a terminal? another computer
running terminal software?) is set to send a CR/LF pair, instead of the Unix
standard LF only. (A colleague had this problem when he tried to attach an
old serial terminal to a serial port.) You might attend a bit more closely
to the hosts that others are trying to log in from.
