You may want to just pick up a new drive for Linux, but I know
that rarely does someone want the answer "go buy this".
Fact is, Linux can be happy on 500Mb or so, With X and a Window
manager or two. You can store quite a few programs in that space,
too, so long as you are careful during installation and don't
try to install unecessary crap. (there's quite a bit of stuff on those
CDs. You don't need it all. For example, the HOWTOs come in
several formats and languages. You don't need more than 1 version of them).
Linux programs aren't the HD space hogs that some windows programs can be.
CONS: You need to repartition your windows drive.
Windows 95/98 is NOT happy with less than 1.5 GIG anyway.
(progams can be hundreds of megs. Office/PhotoShop/VisualC++/etc.)
This will leave you little space for expansion.
If you store alot of non-program stuff on your machine
(mp3s, images, etc) or like to install games, your space WILL
BE DEVOURED FAST.
So, I suggest getting another drive for Linux, if you can afford it.
I would say a 2Gig would be fine, but the cost difference between a 4Gig
and a 2Gig is negligable, so get a 4Gig.
Hope this helps,
Bryan
