Well, I did manage to get a SiS 6215C working with XFree86-3.3.3.1;
the documentation says the SiS 6215 series *is* supported.

OK, first off, *don't* use X[cC?]onfigurator. Use XFree86's "native"
xf86config
or XF86Setup. One of these provides you with a convenient GUI, while the
other
is text based. I don't remember how the exact specification sequence goes
in
xf86config, but the following might prove to be useful.
1. Select your mouse type. If you have an old Logitech mouse (it's
certainly
extremely common in India), you want to specify it as a Microsoft-based
serial mouse with emulation/chord-middle. Stay away from Logitech
MouseMan
or MouseSystems or whatever. Improper mouse specification can sometimes
leave you with a completely blank screen, so make sure you do this
properly.
2. Select your video-card and/or chipset as SiS 6215. It'll be there in the
list of cards
that xf86config supplies as "SiS 8C6215" or something. There is a
"Readme" for SiS
cards, maybe that would help.
3. Specify your video RAM as 1MB. Don't leave it for the server to
"auto-detect".
4. Dig out your monitor manual and look up the horizontal and vertical
frequencies for the
resolution you want. Since you have 1MB video-RAM, I'd suggest going
for 800x600
at 16 bpp.
5. Specify the modes you want (640x480@24bpp, 800x600@16bpp, etc.).
6. Select XF86_SVGA as your X server.
Thats about it. Though there definitely must be something that I've missed,
since I'm not on Linux now.
Next fire up X with startx. If it doesn't work, try reducing the resolution
to 640x480@16bpp,
try fiddling around with the mouse type and with the monitor frequencies.
If it still doesn't
work, send me a log ( startx >& startx.log, in [t]csh ), your XF86Config
file, and the exact
make of your mouse & monitor, and I'll give it a shot.
On a different note, SuSE has some specialized X servers (X_SuSE?), and I
used their SiS
server before support for this card was included in XFree86. They're a bit
more trouble
getting configured properly; if you do decide to go for them, contact me if
you need help.
Best of luck!
