1) It is easier to rebuild an SRPM than a tarball:
   for an srpm you just do rpm --rebuild srpm
   for a tarball, you have to untar it, check the readme, ./configure, make
2) It is much easier to keep track of what is installed on a box if you do
   everything with RPMS.  This is useful especially when configuring
   multiple boxes  the same way.  To generate an rpm, you must first
   create an srpm.
