Your swap partition isn't part of the filesystem tree, so it won't show up
in a df listing -- so you needn't worry about that part. As far as I know,
there is no /proc/swap pseudo device (at least Slackware doesn't use one),
so I'm guessing that part of your message is a misreading of something you
saw. But the fact that "free" lists 0 swap means you don't have a swap
partition running.

What you need to do is:

1. Check /etc/fstab to see if it has any entries for swap. A valid one will
look something like this:

/dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 1 1

2. Make sure that the swap partition is properly formatted to be swap. You
do this with the command "mkswap /dev/hda3" (substituting the partition
appropriate to your system, of course).

3. Run "swapon -a" as you did before.

All that said, you may not need swap space, since you have 64 megs of real
memory ... depends on what you use the system for.

And BTW, it really is worth taking the time to note and report the exact
error message. I wouldn't be surprised if seeing it let me (and others) know
exactly what your problem is, letting me give you a more direct solution
than what I provided here.
