Unfortunately, in picking a detail to add, you've selected the wrong one.
Errno 111 just means that some process tried to connect to the X server and
couldn't find one running ... it's the most common error seen in an X
failure and by itself means nothing. (IT's a fancier version of the same
error message you report in your final example.) You need to look at all the
output from startx (or whatever the equivalent is in MetroX) that comes
before this error and see what is happening.

One possibility is that the combination of horizontal sync range, vertical
sync range, and video RAM you've specified do not permit any of the video
modes (color depths + dotresolutons) you've selected to work. Another is
that you've chosen the wrong X servr for your video card.

Your best bet is to run startx again, this time redirecting stderr to a
file. After it fails, read through the file and see what's going on. At that
point you may be able to pose a question specific enough to get some more
focused help.
