Firstly, nowadays you can compile just about everything with modules
options, that does not take any space in the kernel and certanly does not
take up any memory, i have a kernel image of 300k and i could get it
smaller if i wanted to, just about everyting i dont use "all" the time is
compiled as modules.

I dont think there is such a thing as a pcmcia module, possably you have
defined something which depends on a pcmcia slot, remember pcmcia slots are
found in laptops.

Define aliases in /etc/conf.modules such as.
alias net-pf-4 off # IPX
alias net-pf-5 off # APPELTALK
That will stop ipx and appeltalk modules getting loaded.
If you want a full list of examples send me a personal note.
