i had a similar problem. i traced it down to a configuration setting (of the
enhanced IDE support, i think) which i configured as module. because my root
fs was on the IDE disk, the kernel couldn't access it since the code for it
is in a module, which, i think, can only be loaded after bootup and mounting
the root fs.
remedy: change the configuration setting to include IDE support (if it is
what you configured), not as module.
