Hi Chuck et al,
I have to disagree here, 8mb is enough to run "X". I'm doing it right now
on a little 486/33. His major problem will be disk space. I have a small
SuSE (5.2) system running right now with two HDs a 120mb and 520mb. Linux
has all of the 120mb (20mb of swap) and 370mb of the other. Right now I'm
running at about 80% full on both. If possible I'd say add another bigger
HD as soon as you can. Of course, it's not wrong to add more ram if able.
And yes he must add swap.
About running X I'm able to run just about anything I want to. But for
example Netscape takes over 5 minutes to load and I only use it when I
must. WP8 works good formating letters etc, but I have to write in VI and
import the text. Gimp will run, but I can't really do anything with it. I
had KDE running (loved it too), but my HDs were filling up so I had to
delete it. :( Running fvwm2 is quite fine with only 8mb, it takes about 3
minutes to load. You should hear my HDs!
Overall it is possible to run X with 8mb. But you will need to have some
patients running it.
LATER!
