Does startx really give no error output to the text console? (I assume you
mean that you drop back to the text console when you say the server
immediately shuts down.) If so, try running
startx -probeonly
and see what it reports. If it is reporting errors to the console, take a
look at them, perhaps by redirecting them to a file with a command like
startx >xerrors 2>&1
If you can't figure out what's up from this, it should at least give you
enough information for a more detailed posting (don't just tell us about
errno 111, though - that's NOT enough information to do anything with).
