Happened with me also, so I stopped gpm. I think RH5 manual said
something about gpm and X not getting along well.

1. Did you get the newer rpm 4.08
2. there is quite a delay in starting messenger, I would average over 30
seconds. Nonetheless mine always starts, so give it some time. Also if
NS hangs just kill the process - XKILL then kill -KILL PID then restart
netscape, I do this every night.

Sometimes there is a delay during login, between username and password
and after login when it fails. This is generally less than 5 seconds
though.
