I have a few questions regarding XFree86 having at last sorted out my
display problem.

1) When I was having my display hassles and was stuck in 320x204, I was able
to see a start button with menus and all sorts of nice GUI stuff in XFree86.
To fix the display problem I ended up totally erasing the /usr/X11R6
directory and installing XFree86 v3.3.3.1 from scratch. Display problems
solved! However, now I load up via startx and I get only a few xterm
windows, one called login (why? it looks like an xterm window), and a clock.
My original installation was from RedHat 5.2 so I suppose that put the start
button etc in. So how do I install these? I seem to have the 'bones' of
XFree86 without the 'meat'.

2) I noticed files like xf98config in my /usr/X11R6/bin directory. Does
this mean that there is XFree98? Am I running a well old version ie.
XFree86? I don't think so especially since Linux was only conceived in the
early 1990s. What's the story here? The 86 doesn't refer to 1986 does it?

regards,

Rupert.
