I've not seen that error and have been running 4.51 for some time now. 
So I can't help with that problem, but I will answer your last question
- as far as I can tell 4.51 is not too buggy.  In fact I've had almost
no trouble at all.  I downloaded the binary instead of the source. 
System here is Slack 3.4 with kernel 2.0.36 on a Pentium 166 with 64
megs RAM.  If you're willing to do a binary instead of source that may
be worth looking into.
