Now, if you were asking how to get the passwords, I'd say, ask the bloke
you stole the machine from, but as you're not, perhaps you came by it
honestly... I have slackware 3.4, but I know that because I installed
it. Really, I have SlackHat 4.9 (I've installed and built a lot of
other stuff on top of slackware..), but I couldn't tell you how to find
the slackware version, unless, if you're very lucky, you might log in as
root, and type "mail", and you might see a mail message from Patrick J.
Vollkerding with a Subject: Welcom to Linux (slackware #.#) and a few
helpful hints. The stock slackware login banner will give you the
kernel version number, or you can get it with uname -a.

If you have /usr/src/linux/README, it will tell you how to compile the
kernel. If you don't, you will have to install the kernel source before
you can compile it anyway. I recommend that you read and understand the
lilo README before you try installing a new kernel. It will probably be
in /usr/doc/lilo/README, if not, install the lilo source and it will be
with it.

Sounds like you are in a soldiers into the minefield OJT program. :-)

Well, man and apropos are your friends.
