I never take the "piddle", i may critise sometimes but nothing of the sort in
this case, just my typo, "vage" instead of vauge.

Not in all cases, the root directory (contains the system) must be "/" and
nothing more, unless you are booting from another machine, or you know
exachly what you are doing, one mistake there and your system will not boot.

Futher more its not a path as such, but a mount-point which MUST be a
directory on "/" or another mounted drive.

'man fstab' will give some information, but you may need to "study" it as
its rather vauge for someone not understaning its principable.

startx ??      If that does not work,

'xfconfig'
'Xconfigurator'
'XF86Setup'
'SuperProbe' ( probes for video cards ).
