Who know's, nls = Native Langauage Support, i compile all NLS options as
modules. I have never seen any problems with them.

Could it be that you are using 2.2.x kernels and have not installed "kmod".

Or it could be an old modules which was left in the directory when you
compiled a new kernel of the same version number.

modprobe looks into /etc/conf.modules for aliases and config options.
Check the HOWTO's for Kerneld and Modules in you /usr/doc dir's.

If you are using 2.2.x check out /usr/src/linux/Documentation/kmod.txt
modules.txt etc..
