First step, relax.
Second step, type joe /etc/lilo.conf and use joe's help by typing
ctrl-k-h for the help menu.
(Some of the hardcore Unix guys will tell you to use vi but it is not
real user friendly to the newbie.  I recommend using joe until you can
get going and then learn vi.)

Typing the path with file name will not do anything unless the file is
an executeable.
