Odd ... I've always found recompiling my kernels to be quite easy:
* It's spelled out in great detail in the kernel howto
* With the advent of the menuconfig and the xconfig doing that step
is extremely easy
* For that matter config itself wasn't difficult - the others just
look better and are a bit easier to navigate
Of all the things I've compiled on my system the kernel is certainly
among the easiest I've ever done. In fact, the first thing I *ever*
compiled under Linux was the kernel. That was after less than a week of
using Linux.
On the subject of Slack and rpm's - the rpm program can be obtained and
installed on a Slack system. I tried that but never got the thing to
work. So I went back to gzipped tarballs.
