I thought I could answer this one correctly from memory, but I decided to
check the PPP HowTo anyway, just to be sure. The answer is there, explained
more clearly than I can. Just go to this URL:

This HowTo should be your first thought when you have a PPP question. It's
not perfect, but it's pretty good for the basics.
