I can't tell you what "should be done" because I don't know what services
you need to have working. Given that many services are potential security
holes, newer Linux distributions default to running only a few inetd-based
services (like telnet and ftp) and expect the user to turn on the other ones
he or she needs. (This is a vast improvement from earlier setups, where the
user was expected to turn off unwanted services, a trap for the Unix-naive.)

Anyway, how you turn on additional services depends on the service. For
inetd-based services, you edit the file /etc/inetd.conf to uncomment the
lines for the services you want to run. Then restart inetd ( "kill -SIGHUP
pid" will work, replacing pid with the process-id of inetd).
