Just a few thoughts on your problem ...
1. Have you tried eliminating the 3 lines that cause the errors to see if
that ends the lock problem? As I read them, those lines are setting up the
modem for fax operation, something you don't need to do.
2. Have you considered using something other than mgetty? As I read the
mgetty docs, the app suffers from the weakness of needing to init the modem,
then wait for the text string RING to act. The older agetty isn't as
versatile as mgetty, but it does allow you to set the modem to auto-answer.
It then watchtes the DCD hardware line to know when a call has arrived.
3. In searching around for info on mgetty, I found three sources that might
be helpful to you:
a. http://sunland.gsfc.nasa.gov/info/mgetty/ is a guide to mgetty
that discusses many "common problems" in a troubleshooting section.
b. http://www.leo.org/~doering/mgetty/ is the origin site for mgetty
and includes extensive on-Web documentation.
c. a lot of messages about mgetty seem to show up on the linux-ISP
mailing list. One archived message is at
http://www.kopower.com/lists/linuxisp.2/0058.html . The sigfile includes
info on how to join the list.
As I've said, I'm no mgetty expert, so this will be my last posting on this
thread ... I'll leave it to others who actually know something to provide
